So you are one of the “It’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game” types.

All I know is that some poorly played games have made me feel damned good.

That quote refers to moral outcomes and has nothing to do with the quality of games played per se; and I would hope all conservatives believe in it:

"For when the One Great Scorer comes
To mark against your name,
He writes – not that you won or lost –
But how you played the Game."
(from "Alumnus Football" -- Grantland Rice.)

Despite its context, that phrase isn't even remotely about football.

However, I will tell you this with respect to the point you're trying to make. You don't learn anything useful as a player or coach from this kind of game, except what you need to fix.
