Middle Eastern Kingdom building 600-mile wall and ditch along its border with Iraq in effort to insulate itself from the chaos engulfing its neighbours.
When a raiding party from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant attacked a Saudi border post last week, it was no mere hit on a desert outpost.
The jihadists were launching an assault on the new, highest profile effort by Saudi Arabia to insulate itself from the chaos engulfing its neighbours.
The Saudis are building a 600-mile-long Great Wall - a combined fence and ditch - to separates the country from Iraq to the north.
Much of the area on the Iraqi side is now controlled by Isil, which regards the ultimate capture of Saudi Arabia, home to the Two Holy Mosques of Mecca and Medina, as a key goal.
The proposal had been discussed since 2006, at the height of the Iraqi civil war, but work began in September last year after Isils charge through much of the west and north of the country gave it a substantial land border with the Kingdom to the south....

Simply go around the ends of the wall through Jordan or Kuwait, duh.
Call them not ISIS or ISIL, but Daesh, as the Australian Prime Minister does— they hate it.
Meanwhile the Saudis pay off politicians to allow Muslim immigration to spread Wahabbism around the globe.
I know, I know, after Obama leaves town and reasonable, patriotic Americans take over the government.
When will that be, again?
Maybe our American politicians should tell the Saudis that walls and fences don't work.
Saudis fund terrotist training and recruiting mosques all around the world including in USA. .and just sent more money to terrorists in Mideast trying to kill people there. Lots of money. Guess tbe Saudis are finally awakening to the danger of provisioning rabid wolves - they might bite the hand that feeds them. I bet the Saudis can’t keep them out. The oil prize there is just too inviting a lure
Jordan is VERY hard to get into...don’t know about Kuwait, never been there.
Meanwhile Israel stands accused of being evil for building a protective wall/fence after countless attacks.
The irony of this whole story is unbelievable, well almost. In an age where our “president” is releasing terrorists from Gitmo, refusing to call ISIS islamic and sending James Freaking Taylor to stand for us after an act of barbarous muslim terrorism, nothing surprises me anymore..
They can’t fence out ideas. The Saudi royals have been called decadent and unworthy custodians of Islam’s most holy sites by the Iranian mullahs. ISIS, the Sunni jihadists the Saudis spawned, view themselves as the guardians of those sites and the oil beneath them. The entire Arabian peninsula is likely to suffer the fate of Libya. Most Saudi royals store huge sums in Christian banks and have second homes in the West. The drop in the price of oil is placing enormous pressure on the Saudis. If they are unable to subsidize Sunni Egypt, the day of reckoning and the “Arab Spring” will soon arrive.
Even so it serves the purpose of concentrating the invading force along a more narrow corridor and minimizing the size of a defending force required along the Iraqi border.
Static defenses became obsolete during WWI but they might work against a group of 9th century throwbacks.
I'll be glad when the media settle in on a name as well. It's almost as bad as the "unarmed teenager" prefix with the rattling off of the various names for "those islamic terrorists" (T.I.T.'s?). d:^)
Another Maginot Line.
They’ll just build tunnels like they did in the Gaza strip.
Can the Saudis see and read the handwriting on the wall, as this is just the beginning. Who or what will it take to stop this menace fueled and bred by a faulty religious ideology. Interesting times we live in, certainly will be interesting to see how this will play out
I don’t agree.
These measures are great against non conventional and civilian migration. They are not building it to stop a full on tank and aircraft lead invasion.
A fence like this would work great along our southern border. We would still have the tunnels, small plains, and boats around the edges, but the free range invasion would be brought to a sudden halt.
Rush mentioned this yesterday. Someone told him about it-—Rush didn’t say who it was. This person also described a meeting held by the king of Saudi Arabia for foreign ambassadors. The king told them he believed Europe could fall to ISIS by 2020.
I prefer “curs” for followers of the cur-an.
