I make a point of taking my business to places that do NOT have multilingual signs or phone messages, particularly Spanish. I resent having a foreign language foisted on me in my own country.
I make an exception for tourist-oriented businesses. One place where we really ought to have multilingual signs and don’t is in the subway (like they do in most European countries). But that would require effort on the part of the government, as opposed to having the government imposing onerous requirements on us.
And btw, I can speak passable Spanish, along with several other languages, and I am an (unpaid) ESL teacher. So, no, I am not a “hater.”
Up in AZ and NV, lots of luck with that - even McDonald's has dual language. I'm at the point of making up small round labels in red, white and blue with "This is America, we speak English" on them and start pasting them where I can.
On my really cranky days, when I'm in places like Wal-Mart, I'll swap some dual-label boxes around so the the English side faces the customer. (When I worked there as a night-stocker some years back, the Mexican guys were facing them with the Spanish sides out.)
What you said. I speak Spanish, too, and used to tutor ESL students until I ran out of legal ones (I refuse to assist illegals).
Don’t give my business to bilingual-signed businesses. But that’s only gonna work for a while. One day all of the businesses will have signs in both languages.
Demographics is destiny and us native born Americans aren’t having enough babies to stop that train wreck.
