It all started when a University alumnus made a $3 million dollar donation to fund the position of Director of Islamic Studies at Duke University. Bettye Martin Musham, who gifted the Islamic Studies Center with the vast sum of money, said that she was convinced that it was the right thing to do after hearing a lecture on the meaning of jihad. Musham said that she and her husband would later become hooked with the importance of Islam.
Dr. Omid Safi was appointed to run Islamic Studies at Duke University in July of 2014. He has been the point of contact for several media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Huffington Post, in response to Duke University reversing its decision to broadcast Muslim prayers from Duke Chapel. Following Dukes retraction of allowing for Islamic prayer to be amplified from the schools chapel, Safi took to Twitter to express his discontent.

Safis past statements may shed light onto why he chose to forgo mentioning the religion.
The Duke Islamic leader has time and time again expressed radical ideals through his social media accounts, news articles, and television appearances. Dr. Safi has frequently described the worldwide Muslim community as one that is oppressed and marginalized, and excused the perpetrators of the Charlie Hebdo massacre as victims of political grievances. He also excused Palestinian terror group Hamas of any wrongdoing, but has in the recent past described Israel as a terror state and decried the Israeli Prime Minister and U.S. President Barack Obama as war criminals.
...
Safi invoked Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (who was a strong supporter of the State of Israel) in order to demonize the Jewish State.

Sold out for a mere three mil.
There should be no Islamic Studies program at Duke or any other United States university .
Anyone wishing to study this cult should have to do so in Yemen or some other middle eastern rathole .
The United States Constitution needs to be amended to reflect that ‘cults’ are not entitled to the rights , distinctions and protections that actual religions receive . Islam needs to be defined as a cult , not a religion . This cult needs to then be banned in practice, promotion or propagation within the United States . Outlaw it .
I disagree, we should always study our enemies. Pamela Geller or John Bolton would be good choices as a head for the department.
Excellent point!
Islam is a wolf(tyranny) in sheep’s(religious) clothing.
As a fashion statement I think the towels look better on women than men.
Islam is a war plan.
Spiritual war, which then gets physical when it builds up enough steam.
True dat!

Dominance by any means since the day it was conceived 1400 years ago.
Here’s the thing....”Dad” comes up and agrees to send Mandy (his daughter) off to a high-status private college like Duke. Yearly costs for the school, books, room and board, fees? Roughly $55,000. Figure another $12,000 for clothing, pocket money, and credit card usage. When Dad wakes up and reads the headline...’Radical change at Duke’ and looks at the $67,000 he pays out a year...he’s a bit furious and he says something about this. Same way for old-timer Duke graduates who funnel $100,000 here and a million there as contributions. The gimmick use of the three million for the Islamic department might have cost them $20 million a year in donations.
The Allah of Islam is a caricature of the Jehovah of the Judeo-Christian bible.
A lot of modern atheists don’t even bother to look for Christian misbehavior as there is so little of it (other than being lukewarm). Instead they talk as though Islam were the same thing.
Let's hope.
... don't look for Christian misbehavior ... instead talk as though Islam were the same thing ???
I don't even have a guess.
Agreed.
Atheists know much about nothing.
