High School Girls Basketball Coach Suspended After His Team Won 161-2
The Postgame ^ | 1/15/2015

A high school girls basketball coach in California has been suspended for a rare reason: Winning by too large a margin. Arroyo Valley's Michael Anderson kept his foot on the gas pedal even as his team went up by 60 early in the game against a winless opponent.

The end result was brutal: A 161-2 beatdown.

Decisive as it might be, it was far from impressive. The coach was called by the school's athletic director and later told The Riverside Press-Enterprise that he had been suspended two games for what had happened.

The coach also expressed regret for his actions while suggesting that he didn't expect the game to get so far out of hand -- when he put in his bench players in the second half, he was surprised by their output.

Arroyo Valley applied a high-pressure full-court trap throughout the first half, ostensibly under the pretense of tuning up for tougher competition down the road. By halftime, the score was 104-1.

Nevertheless, the opposing team's coach was not happy with the result, and he made sure his opinions were known. He called the ethics of Anderson into question.

"People shouldn’t feel sorry for my team," opposing coach Dale Chung of Bloomington High told The Sporting News. "They should feel sorry for his (Anderson’s) team, which isn’t learning the game the right way."

The Press-Enterprise reported that Arroyo Valley won its first game without Anderson. It was also a blowout -- 80-19 over San Bernardino Indian Springs -- but not the extent of the one against Bloomington that triggered the uproar.

Stomping the lesser team is the quickest most merciful way.

I feel sorry for the children of people so stupid as to send those children to a school that punishes success.

I thought they didn’t keep score nowadays, so as not to hurt the loser’s feelings.

The loser complains and the WINNING coach gets suspended because the other side lost. Coach whining wins.

That is the lesson learned by the losing team.
I hope I did not upset anyone by calling the losing team losers along with their losing coach....

The opposing coach could have thrown in the towel. He could have stopped it.

But seeing as they are a winless team, maybe he just isn’t that good of a coach. Maybe the coach who was suspended for winning (!!!) could go and coach the losing team for a couple of weeks and help them out.

We are bending over backwards to make the biggest whiner happy. But whiners are never happy to matter how much you try to accommodate them.

But will they do anything about a coach who is so inept that his team loses by 159 points?

That’s a little ridiculous. Things should not be this lopsided. Maybe they need to take a look at matching up teams that are closer in ability.

And, btw, it sounds like he could have put his bench players in sooner, or gone deeper on the bench.

“’People shouldn’t feel sorry for my team,’ opposing coach Dale Chung of Bloomington High told The Sporting News.”

Ah, yes, they should feel sorry for your team. If you’ve been properly placed in a competitive division/conference/what=have=you, and you properly did your scheduling, then the only acceptable conclusion other than that your team sucks. And you’re its coach. If you inappropriately scheduled a team that was just obviously, and literally, out of your league, then you, the coach, suck, and folks should still feel sorry for your team.

I remember a high school game we were in that we couldn't bust the press.
After a brutal stretch, after a bucket, we would inbound the ball to the other team. After a couple of times doing this, the opposing coach called off the press for the rest of the game.

Epilogue:

We got run ragged by our coach learning how to beat that kind of press.

Stopping the game would the coach have forfeited? Then too, if the coach told the team to miss shots then the coach would be charged with fraud or something? If the opposing team is that bad ......

It’s a rule. Unique little snowflakes must NEVER feel bitter disappointment much less embarrassment. It might cause them to question their uniqueness and undergo melting.

I mean can you imagine? they might look back on the ass kicking they got, get pissed and do better.

Thats wrong. They must be equally unique.
