Growers struggle with glut of legal pot in Washington state

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington's legal marijuana market opened last summer to a dearth of weed. Some stores periodically closed because they didn't have pot to sell. Prices were through the roof.

Six months later, the equation has flipped, bringing serious growing pains to the new industry.

A big harvest of sun-grown marijuana from eastern Washington last fall flooded the market. Prices are starting to come down in the state's licensed pot shops, but due to the glut, growers are — surprisingly — struggling to sell their marijuana. Some are already worried about going belly-up, finding it tougher than expected to make a living in legal weed.

"It's an economic nightmare," says Andrew Seitz, general manager at Dutch Brothers Farms in Seattle.

How do you propose keeping illicit drugs out the hands of those who want to buy it?

Hammer the sellers. Seems to work for Singapore.

“We have young criminals who got caught with a small amount of MJ and ended up being trained by the drug dealers in prison to become hard core dealers and ruined their lives.”

I would have to call BS on that one. Nobody is in prison for a small amount of pot for personal use. If they were sent there for pot they were selling it, or it was a parole violation they were busted for and they already had a rap sheet a mile long.

A convicted felon might go back for pot use, but nobody is there for that as their only crime.

Do you have any specific examples? I am retired after 40 years of working as a carpenter. Residential, commercial, heavy highway and industrial aspects. Awarded custody of my son at age 4, and raised to almost 19 before leaving our home. Worked 40 months in Iraq and Afghanistan as a civilian contractor. 10 years military service working as a parachute rigger. Heavy drop, ejection, etc. I’ve been hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, for the last 3 years, covering 2,200 miles. Worked on a successful political campaign to unseat a sitting US senator. Was there something you wanted to iterate involving the use of MJ? Go ahead. I’m listening.

You know, I just did some reading (a little) and it has either been relaxed, or I’ve been told wives tales for years. I was under the impression tobacco seeds were strictly regulated and even the total number of plants for personal use were restricted. So far, I’m not finding any actual laws (not to mean there aren’t any). I would assume selling it is a serious no-no, but looks like I stand corrected on this one. It appears you can grow as much as you want for personal use without paying taxes on it.

"from 1980 to 1995, alcohol consumption dropped by 23% while remaining legal."

While remaining legal? Not really.

The Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act of 1984 changed the minimum legal drinking age from 18 to 21. Meaning that, by your own statistics, making something illegal reduces usage.

I'll ask again. Have you ever smoked marijuana?

I think it annoys you that I don't answer your question. :)

If I say "Yes" you can say "you're a hypocrite!" and if I say "No." You can say "You're Ignorant!". I think i'll give it a miss.

Now how about you ask me how many people that I know who smoke pot and how many of them are Worthless F**ks?

The answers are "A bunch." and "All of them."

What makes you an expert on its effects?

I dare say one can omit getting shot and still have a good working understanding of the phenomena.

After the civil war caused the importation of tons of opium and cocaine...

This thread is a discussion of marijuana, not cocaine and opium.

Do you have any examples where banning marijuana saved a society from itself?

Government cannot regulate morality.

I see this claim all the time, and like pretty much everything Libertarian, it's utter nonsense.

Discrimination is considered immoral. Try doing it and then come back and tell me the government can't regulate morality.

If you've given the matter any serious thought, you quickly realize that Laws are nothing but "regulated morality." That is what a law *IS*. Somebody has an idea that something is "bad" and so the government regulates it by passing a law.

You want to see another example of the government "regulating" morality? Try refusing to bake a gay wedding cake. You'll find out they regulate your morality just fine, it just may not be *YOUR* idea of morality, but rest assured it will be SOMEBODY'S idea of morality.

we need to use tactics more like Singapore.

So that's another vote for modeling the Founders' America after an authoritarian regime.

The fact that usage has been held down to 2% for over 100 years is evidence that it has been pretty successful so far.

No it's not - it could equally well be that in America 2% is the maximum level of inclination to use drugs - recalling, as I've explained to you several times, that addiction experts agree that drug use and addiction are not solely about biochemistry.

Government says abortion is okay. Does that make it moral?

The decline was well underway before then: http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh27-1/30-38.htm

Oh, snap. That ought to persuade the rest of FR.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't need to persuade the knowledgeable and sensible, and nobody really cares what the fools think. I think most rational people ignore these pot threads anyway.

“NO ONE can point to a single death related to marijuana.”

There was a case reported just after it was legalized in CO.

Edibles weren’t working fast enough, so he just kept eating more. He had no experience with them and didn’t know it takes longer for edibles to take effect.

Neither. Your refusal to answer makes you a coward.

Now how about you ask me how many people that I know who smoke pot and how many of them are Worthless F**ks?

Correlation does not equal causation. I'll bet all of the pot smokers you know also drink water. Does that mean that drinking water make them losers?

Anyone with any REAL drug world experience knows that people who abuse drugs of any kind do so to escape the pain in their life. People who don't have pain in their life, don't abuse drugs.

I dare say one can omit getting shot and still have a good working understanding of the phenomena.

Nothing beats real world experience. you can say

Liberty: people I like doing what they enjoy. Libertinism: people I dislike doing what they enjoy.

More like "Liberty: People living their lives and raising their children without a Lord stealing the fruits of their labor."

Libertinism "People indulging their hedonism while leaving the bills for others to pay. "

Your pot habit falls into the later category. It is often indirect theft from the productive in society.
