As the United States Senate prepares to vote on a non-binding resolution on whether or not manmade global warming exists, Pope Francis weighed in on the issue with his most extensive and forceful comments on the subject to date.
Let's just say that the pope is not aligned with many Senate Republicans, who doubt the reality and threat of manmade global warming, on this issue.
Speaking to reporters aboard his plane while flying to Manila from Sri Lanka, Pope Francis said the "majority" of global warming is manmade, which is a view that is consistent with mainstream climate-science findings.
“I don’t know if it is all [man’s fault] but the majority is, for the most part, it is man who continuously slaps down nature,” he said, according to The Guardian.
His outspoken stance on climate change has encouraged debate within the Catholic community worldwide, as many people view the Earth as God's creation, and think it is arrogant to believe that humans could ever play such a dominant role over nature. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), an evangelical Christian, is one of the most prominent holders of this view.
“We have, in a sense, lorded it over nature, over Sister Earth, over Mother Earth,” the pope said, according to The Guardian.
“I think man has gone too far,” he added. “Thank God that today there are voices that are speaking out about this.”
The pope plans to issue an encyclical in June that will lay out his views on climate change and other environmental issues in greater detail, ahead of a crucial global warming summit in Paris scheduled for this December. An encyclical is an official Papal document that is sent to all Catholic bishops around the world.
The Paris talks are supposed to result in a new global climate agreement for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that would enter into force in 2020.
The pope said he was "disappointed" by the most recent United Nations climate talks, which were held in Lima, Peru, last December. The talks proved particularly arduous, and had to be extended by two days, before diplomats agreed to a draft text to be negotiated in Paris.
“The Peru meeting was nothing much; it disappointed me. I think there was a lack of courage. They stopped at a certain point. Let’s hope the delegates in Paris will be more courageous and move forward with this,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, senators will have to go on record with their own views on climate science when they vote as early as Friday on a planned amendment that would force them to endorse or reject the existence of manmade global warming on climate change. At least two senators — one Democrat and one Independent who caucuses with the Democrats — plan to offer versions of amendments to that effect during debate on the Keystone XL Pipeline.
A similar vote took place in 2005, when a "Sense of the Senate" resolution was adopted. At that time, 12 Republicans joined Democrats to support the amendment, but there will likely be less Republican support this time, given the widespread rejection of global warming research findings among today's Republican leadership.

If Noah had lived in the United States in the last ten years, the story may have gone something like this:
And the Lord spoke to Noah and said, “In one year, I am going to make it rain and cover the whole earth with water until all flesh is destroyed. But I want you to save the righteous people and two of every kind of living thing on earth. Therefore, I am commanding you to build an Ark.” In fear and trembling, Noah took the plans and agreed to build the ark. “Remember,” said the Lord, “you must complete the Ark and bring everything aboard in one year.”
Exactly one year later, fierce storm clouds covered the earth and all the seas of the earth went into a tumult. The Lord saw that Noah was sitting in his front yard weeping. “Noah!” He shouted. “Where is the Ark?” “Lord, please forgive me,” cried Noah. “I did my best, but there were big problems.”
“First, I had to get a permit for construction, and your plans did not meet the building codes. I had to hire an engineering firm and redraw the plans. Then I got into a fight with OSHA over whether or not the Ark needed a sprinkler system and approved floatation devices. Then, my neighbor objected, claiming I was violating zoning ordinances by building the Ark in my front yard, so I had to get a variance from the city planning commission.”
“Then, I had problems getting enough wood for the Ark because there was a ban on cutting trees to protect the Spotted Owl. I finally convinced the U.S. Forest Service that I really needed the wood to save the owls. However, the Fish and Wildlife Service won’t let me take the 2 owls. The carpenters formed a union and went on strike. I had to negotiate a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board before anyone would pick up a saw or hammer. Now, I have 16 carpenters on the Ark, but still no owls.”
“When I started rounding up the other animals, an animal rights group sued me. They objected to me taking only two of each kind aboard. This suit is pending. Meanwhile, the EPA notified me that I could not complete the Ark without filing an environmental impact statement on your proposed flood. They didn’t take very kindly to the idea that they had no jurisdiction over the conduct of the Creator of the Universe. Then, the Army Corps of Engineers demanded a map of the proposed flood plain. I sent them a globe.”
“Right now, I am trying to resolve a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that I am practicing discrimination by not taking atheists aboard. The IRS has seized my assets, claiming that I’m building the Ark in preparation to flee the country to avoid paying taxes. I just got a notice from the state that I owe them some kind of user tax and failed to register the Ark as a ‘recreational water craft.’ And finally, the ACLU got the courts to issue an injunction against further construction of the Ark, saying that since God is flooding the earth, it’s a religious event and therefore unconstitutional. I really don’t think I can finish the Ark for another five or six years.”
Noah waited.
The sky began to clear, the sun began to shine, and the seas began to calm. A rainbow arched across the sky. Noah looked up hopefully, “You mean you’re not going to destroy the earth, Lord?”
“No,” He said sadly. “I don’t have to. The government already has.”
This man is wrong for the job. He is a socialist, and I regret that he was chosen. As a Catholic, I say we need a Pope like the late Pope John Paul..he was simply the best Pope we ever had for a multitude of reasons. Here’s to the next Pope, and I hope he’s a reincarnation of the late, great Pope John Paul, the pride of Poland and the Vatican.
Does the Pope not realize that it is the increased presence of the Holy Spirit, our great Helper that is providing us with the increased temperature?
The greater the sin that man creates and holds on to, the greater the temperature increase as the Holy Spirit burns that sin away.
In many ways, we are garbage burners. Dense objects such as fear, anger and jealousy cannot exist in the presence of the Holy Spirit. When the two try to occupy the same space, the Holy spirit wins. The transformation process gives off the heat.
This is why giving a prayerful blessing to an evil person is like placing HOT coals upon their heads.
What does it mean to slap down nature? How does one do that? I understand slapping a face, but slapping nature I don't understand.
Next, if there's a sister earth and mother earth, then there has to be a brother earth and a father earth, no?
