RadioShack may be preparing for bankruptcy

Struggling to raise enough cash and credit to stay alive, RadioShack is reportedly preparing to file for bankruptcy as soon as next month.

The filing could come the first week of February, according to the Wall Street Journal. RadioShack declined to comment for this story.

The company had a deadline of Jan. 15 to come up with $100 million in combined cash and available credit, or its major creditors can pull the plug on the long-term financing it needs to survive. RadioShack only had $63 million available heading into the Christmas shopping season.

The struggling electronics retailer has been trying to close 1,100 of its 5,000 stores since March, but it's an expensive undertaking. It only came up with enough cash to close 175 stores through the end of October.

Nope, DECSystem10. PDP11’s were the network nodes for the packet switching network.

That odd battery, cable, or connector you “need right now” on a Sunday afternoon.

For any of those, I've recently found Battery Plus stores, which seem to be popping up in many places. Very convenient, they always seem to have what I need no matter how esoteric, and have decent prices.

And there was always something creepy about how they wanted your name and address when you checked out.

That used to annoy me like crazy. I always gave a fake name. Nine times out of ten they didn't have what I wanted, and the store employees were clueless about what was asked for. I'd ask for 22-gauge dual stranded wire and they'd bring me AC electrical cord or single solid wire. Simple stuff! You'd ask about eproms and dips and their eyes would glaze over.

My first computer was a TRS-80 CoCo. 16K of RAM, cassette tape storage, a 300 baud modem and a Videotex ROM cartridge.

I think I still have a 110 baud modem in a drawer somewhere. Mesmerizing watching text painted on the screen one slow letter at a time!

I quit going to them years ago when they fired their employees via the email. Think it was right before Christmas too?

They did not even have the guts to face their employees too.

I thought that was crummy, and quit shopping there at that point. Granted that was 10 years ago.

Although I went back 1 time since about a year ago to get a charger for my phone.

It's not the same old Radio Shack of the past. It looked like a Wireless phone store. I remember thinking there are not going to make it like this.

Anyhow the modern Radio Shack IMO is Fry's . Although they are limited in locations. If you never been to a Fry's and in the Area. I strongly recommend going if you like electronics. It's a terrific store. Fry's puts Best Buy to shame.

If you are still in Atlanta area, then they have Fry's there.

It is well worth the trip. If you love electronics, then you will be there a while looking at everything they have. It's amazing.

BTW, I actually visited the Fry's in Alpharetta.

Although I think it's called Milton now?

You’ve got questions? We’ve got cell phones!

I haven’t stepped foot in one in years. I used to enjoy browsing there. I even found the inspiration for the device i built which became my first publication.

At one point, Tandy bought GRiD Systems, which put the first laptop on a space shuttle.

The BNSF railway bought the GRID factory in North Fort Worth and has a hell lot of IT there now. Right across Western Center from the headquarters. If you can get inside it looks like they moved India in there. The cafeteria has an original Zerox word processor from the 1982 time frame on display. They used those in the offices, took eleven minutes to boot. Before that the old Fort Worth and Denver used Wang CPM computers in their Fort Worth headquarters.
