Tom Hanks Reminisces on Community College: 'Getting A's' and 'Looking at Girls'

Tom Hanks is a big fan of the community college system.

The Oscar winner graduated from high school in Oakland, California, in 1974 and with "lousy SAT scores" and no money for tuition, he enrolled at Chabot College nearby his home.

In an op-ed in the New York Times published today, Hanks, 58, remembers those days where he went to a school that was basically "all free but for the effort and the cost of used textbooks."

Then Hanks brings up President Obama's hope to "make two years of free community college accessible for up to nine million Americans."

"I hope the idea sticks," he added. "High school graduates without the finances for a higher education can postpone taking on big loans and maybe luck into the class that will redefine their life’s work. Many lives will be changed."

Same here. My grades “supposedly” were not good enough for university (momentarily) so I spent 5 semesters in commie college. It was actually a relevant experience as my cash job to pay for it was being a DJ/audio tech at a local strip club.

Socialist “free” stuff always costs you everything, including your freedom, in the end.

So taxpayers shelling out for a MAYBE??

Hanks didn’t need a government to do it for him. If someone has less ambition than Hanks at that age, is throwing our money at him will not help.

Yes, that is a lot of HS students experiences. THE POINT that is missed here is that Obama is reinventing the wheel...we already have the Pell Grant, basically a fee Community College Education, so why does he want to re do it??? It’s what he wants to put into it that counts...think about that. Illegals and Muslims in refugee status go to the head of the line, like Affirmative Action used to do for blacks looking for work.

Obama says they have to work for the free education...doing what? Community organizing, and if he gets those who are obligated to him for getting them in the country.....then what?? This is a CON for something else.

I got lucky when I went to community college. It was the only place to learn actual skills. I became a certified welder and welded my way through 2 more years of votech community college. Then I learned engineering and machining. AND i learned I don’t want to be a welder anymore. I dropped out of university college when I went broke and refused to go in to debt.

But today it appears that working through college is horrible abuse of human rights and probably racist.

Calif Community college is free for approximately half the students (varies from a quarter to 3/4 or so, depending which of the 108 campuses). This, through a quick easy one signature fee waiver form. The students with money lay only $46 a unit And there’s federal pell grants and many scholarships and also student loans etc. The taxpayers pick up the vast majority of the costs And they are open door schools - anyone can go to any of the community colleges s/he/it wishes. Days. Evenings. Weekends. Online classes.

I hear that. Plus the student loans gives the impression that they don’t have to work for their party money so they blow it on everything but school and necessities...

He is a good director and producer as well. He makes patriotic movies about the glory of American values and then promotes anti American policies and politicians.

I went through college with the help of a state scholarship and graduated as an engineer during the 60’s. After graduating, I got a job in aerospace while obtaining an engineering masters degree at night at company expense. I got laid off (during the 1960’s aerospace bust) and was promptly drafted. When I got out, still not having much engineering work experience, I had to settle for driving an ice cream truck, while keeping my prospects alive by obtaining another engineering masters degree at night in a different field. I can’t imagine how, but during this miserable period I actually found a girl that would marry me (I was already thirty). Then I actually found somebody crazy enough to take me on again as an engineer. After more than forty years of staying employed we’re retired and still married and have four grandchildren.
