On Tuesday, three Republican Senators joined three Democrats to introduce legislation that would expand the number of guest-workers for the tech industry even though there is a surplus of American high-tech workers.
The Immigration Innovation (I-Squared) bill, introduced by Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), would also enable companies to hire an unlimited number of workers with advanced degrees from U.S. institutions in science, technology, engineering and math, which critics have said would turn some universities into diploma factories for foreign students. Currently, the first 20,000 H-1B applications for those with advanced STEM degrees are exempted.
Hatch said he hoped the bill could be a gateway to more progress on a broader immigration bill.
Im calling on everyone the President, members of both parties, and stakeholders in the tech community to support this bill and help make it the first step towards real immigration reform, he said in a statement. We must find make concrete progress to solve some of the many critical problems facing our nation. I-Squared is an obvious solution to an undeniable need, and I want to work with everyone to get it done now.
In addition to increasing the annual cap on H-1B visas from 65,000 to 115,000, the bill would reform student visas, authorize employment for the dependent spouses of H-1B visas holders, and allow a grace period for foreign workers to change jobs and not be out of status. It would also, among other things, allow for the recapturing of green cards that were approved by Congress in previous years but were not used and dependents of employment-based immigrant visa recipients, U.S. STEM advance degree holders...

So much for protecting the American worker. H1B should be eliminated except in very rare instances. There are plenty of American workers for most of these jobs.
bump for later.
The usual suspects.
Anyone care to place a bet on whether these new "guest workers" are going to be subject to ObamaScare and it's 30 hour mandate?
Well I dunno about the rest of yall but I've shown just how much of an idiotmoronimbecie I can be. No matter WHAT or WHO, The wife and I SIT HOME!
The DR party has no need of our help destroying this once proud and prestigious country!
Stem = Systems something engineering and something, maybe mechanical eng
:)
H1-b is to skilled workers what illegal immigrants are to unskilled.
We live in a oligarchy, no one in power gives a crap about anything or anyone but keeping those currently in power with staying in power.
You’re right; H1-Bs are to destroy the livelihoods of white-collar workers in the same manner illegals destroyed many blue-collar workers.
Here in NJ, I’ve dealt with “guest workers” in financial services that were trafficked here from the Philippines. There is no shortage of unemployed Americans with the same (and better) credentials, but the imported “replacement Americans” cost less.
Skilled labor...hi tech/medical fields...not wetback stuff.
45,000 doesnt seem like much but the devil is in the details. Time will tell. Lot of us in Florida had high hopes for Rubio but he has tied his career to McCain, Graham and the Democrats.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing.
A recently coined acronym which I have only heard in the past two years.
STEM. Science- Technology-Engineering- Mechanics.
Post/thread BUMP!
Americans have no unique “culture”, and even hinting at one gets one tarred & feathered. The WASP culture died decades ago, along with our birthrate; these “replacement Americans” are being trafficked here to replace America’s missing generation.
The northeast is bleeding businesses and skilled workers/taxpayers (Mercedes being the latest to announce their departure from NJ to Atlanta); these foreigners being imported to this country are to keep our public employees (teachers, cops, politicians) on the payroll and our housing occupied. Dealing with them in a professional environment is difficult to say the least; they are hired for jobs they aren’t qualified for because they are the best candidates at the lower wages, but they fall far short of the previous employees’ preformance/skills. We are adjusting to a “new normal” here that is very Third World, where drafting an email or letter has become the task of the resident American in each department; the little we had in common with co-workers before all but erased.
These representatives of government are, in effect, saying that the higher education system in this country is worthless - or at least the citizens who attend such are.
Sometimes, I think more value is placed on rote technical knowledge and execution than on innovation. This is where I think American upbringing and ingenuity sets the stage for innovation, especially when there is a “lazy” component to the problem. “Lazy” being the impetus to solve a problem with nontraditional thinking that contains a “lazy” yet elegant solution involving less actual process.
This goes to show that the eGOP is bought and paid for and does not respond to its base (many affected and out of work tech types are Republicans), does not respond to unemployment and hurts the unemployed, and frankly couldn’t give a rat’s ass about it.
That's it in a nutshell. The people behind this have no fears, because of the wealth they've been able to suck out of the system, for their progeny. They want indentured servants to Uncle Sam.
The war on the average American continues.
There was one word I heard in the Navy that best describes this. “BOHICA” I bet Cadbury Rabbit {the clucking rabbit} McConnell and K-Street Karl are laughing their butts off.
Both parties are completely in bed against Americans.
Both of them.
America needs politicians, who support Americans. American workers, and just plain Americans.
GOP stand up, and be that party. Stop selling out everything, and everyone here at home.
I’m series.
Exactly. Things are slowing and these idiots are ramping up the destruction.
You probably have seen it like I have as well. The company pays for some Islamic shiithole to come over, sets it up living quarters, pays it a very living wage and then the Islamic shiithole bugs out never to be seen again. I do not know how many times this had happened at the engineering firmed I contracted to. Lost in America never to be found.
Yet these “elected officials” are so out of touch that they think all they have to do is pass another law, tweak this one and magic pixie dust applied here will help.
Hey get out ASAP and enjoy your retirement. I retired twice. Once from my long time job and once then from my consulting job. Never looked back after the last one and am loving it.
