Dont buy the hype you might be reading at places like Grantland about Selmas wide release debut at the box office this weekend. The news was not good. Far from it. Especially when compared to other apples, like The Butler, J. Edgar, and W.
Box Office Mojo:
In a distant second place, Selma expanded to nearly 2,200 locations and earned an estimated $11.2 million. Compare that to Lee Daniels The Butler, which dealt with similar issues during a similar time period in U.S. history and earned over twice as much in its first weekend ($24.6 million). Selma instead wound up opening in line with disappointing political dramas J. Edgar ($11.2 million) and W. ($10.5 million).
W. went on to gross a measly $30 million. J. Edgar topped out at $37 million domestic.
Both are considered costly flops.
If theres a perfect storm during Oscar Season, Box Office Mojo sees Selmas best case box office scenario as $50 million. Yet, with an estimated $40 million budget, Selma will have to at least crack $80 to $90 million just to break even.
Selma is undoubtedly suffering a backlash created by its own historically inaccurate smearing of Lyndon Johnson combined with a country thats been thoroughly exhausted by race-race-race-race and lies-lies-lies-lies over the last couple of years.
...The filmmakers behind Selma made a huge moral and public relations error by promoting the Hands Up, Dont Shoot lie fabricated around the self-defense shooting of strong-arm robber Brown.

I'd rather weasels rip my flesh.
I aint no way tired, we sure are!
Ok, blacks had a hard time, I get it. Geez, are we going to be bombarded every year with more white guilt fests?
It’s doing better than “The Interview” and those liars tried to tell us they took in $15 million.
Three weeks later and it still sucks loud enough for everyone to finally get in on the gag of a $44 million loser.
Don't forget mandatory at free community colleges.
You raise an interesting point re King’s April 1967 speech on Vietnam. I’m not sure who wrote the infamous phrase that “the US was the greatest purveyor of violence in the world”.
Two items. I’ve heard names mentioned from Harry Belafonte to one of King’s staff, etc. I believe the answer may have been printed in a book I haven’t see so far. Don’t recall its’ name.
Secondary, the term “purveyor of violence” re the US was used in Red Chinese articles/radio broadcasts during the “Cultural Revolution” as least during the time I was monitoring them for a grad school project (late 1966-1967).
Interesting word “purveyor”. Usually used as a commercial term as in “purveyor of the finest wines, foods, etc.”
King was surrounded by leftists ranging from Andy Young (the least radical of those leftists); Jack O’Dell (Communist Party USA and Soviet asset; Rev. Shuttlesworth, hardcore leftist; Rev. James Bevel, avowedly pro Hanoi - along with his wife - he went to jail for molesting his daughter when she was young; a then radical Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy, and VP of the Soviet KGB “peace” front, the World Peace Council; another Rev. named Farris, and others.
By 1967, it looks like King had changed his opposition to Communism (which he forcefully denounced earlier in his career), or was forced to change his position by those leftists and communists around him.
These are issues which need not only more, deep scholarly research, plus opening all the FBI and CIA files on King, but which need to be aired and discussed publicly by the MSMedia.
Oprah should have cast Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson then included an obama sermon at the end of the film.
Al Sharpton biopic, itll be called SELL ME.
+++++
If there was a justice system, it should be called CELL MATE.
Bingo. Selma = Oscar bait.
I don’t believe he was forced to change his beliefs...I think he was, simply, a leftist by nature. Everything we know of him supports it. Also, his niece, Alveda King, recently said she was mistaken when she claimed he was a Republican.
If King were alive today, he would fit in comfortably with Sharpton, Jackson, and that ilk.
I agree those files should be opened, but I wouldn’t expect honest criticism from the media. King is a religious figure to many; he’s untouchable.
One day at lunch I asked my Pastor if MLK was a communist. My Pastor is 75 years old and followed politics closely his whole life. He answered yes and them said let me show you something. He went to his study and came out with a file about two inches thick. It was all articles from the 50’s and 60’s about MLK. I was floored with what I read. The Rev. was a serial womanizing commie. He loved his white women. Very common knowledge back in his time. I refuse to acknowledge MLK day. I will never celebrate commies.
Looks as if most Americans are tired of their sh!t.
EVERY YEAR, there is another “po lil slave” movie.
I am blaming the white racist honkie McCrackers for not paying to attend this racial sensitivity training AKA Selma Movie
Thanks to Obama’s economy, I no longer have disposable cash to buy movie tickets...but I’ll still be called a racist.

82-Year-Old Black Grandma Votes Republican Because of What Democrats Have Done to My People

Not exactly what C-SPAN expected to run right before airing someone from the Center for American Progress. A self-described 82-year-old black senior citizen grandmother named Joyce called C-SPAN to explain why she voted for the Republican candidate in every race on the ballot this cycle.
I voted straight Republican because I have noticed for years what the Democrat Party has done to my people, she said. Unemployment is higher in the black community that it is double with unemployment than it is anywhere else. Theres no way I could continue to say Im a Christian and stay with the Democrat Party, she continued. They advocate the killing of babies and taking from the doers and giving to the ones sitting doing nothing.
