If only some easily concealable device existed that could be directed at the intruder in situations like this to highly suggest they stop what they are doing immediately. If that didn't work maybe it could have a lever on it that would cause it to discharge projectiles specifically designed to stop a threat.

“The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive,”
Written by someone who has watched too much tv and has very little clue about the real world.
“The canned food item will give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters their classroom.”
Words fail me. This woman really thinks you can stop an armed gunman by chucking a can of corn at him? What’s next, taunting the gunman in hopes he will become so angry that he’ll make a mistake?
Yeesh!
(love your post, btw!)

I’m old Army and not familiar with new combat methods, but can females throw the cans of corn and Campbell’s soup, as hard as the males?

Where do these people like the principal come from? Where do we get them?

I’ve had “Active Shooter” training from my local police. This program was to teach office workers what to do in the event of an active shooter. Believe it or not, throwing things was a strategy of last resort. Obviously getting out quickly is the best. Hiding without being found is next. But once found, throw everything you’ve got.

In a letter Friday, W.F. Burns Middle School Principal Priscella Holley asked parents to have each student bring an 8-ounce canned item. Silliness. You can't hide a gun in an 8-oz. can.

Maybe if it was the first string quarterback or baseball pitcher.
Otherwise, not so much.

I would like to hear this Principal describe the deeper meaning and effectiveness of dodge ball, and hear the comments of the students as they are told to play dodge ball with someone shooting them.

As if we need examples of “educators” being at the bottom of the SAT (and IQ) barrel....QED.
This principal takes the cake.
My apologies to all the really good teachers (not educators) out there.
