Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Defies France To Join Paris March

French president angry over Netanyahu’s attendance.
F. Peter Brown — January 12, 2015

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defied a request from France to stay away from a solidarity march in Paris over the weekend to protest Islamist violence.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas was given the same message. However, when Netanyahu defied France, Abbas was invited by the country.

France drew Israeli ire when it voted in support of the Palestinians over a draft UN Security Council resolution that would have set an end date for Israeli occupation.

When Netanyahu’s rivals in the Israeli governing coalition, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Economy Minister Naftali Bennett, announced that they would be attending the march, Netanyahu decided to go.

French President Francois Hollande wanted “focus on solidarity with France, and to avoid anything liable to divert attention to other controversial issues, like Jewish-Muslim relations or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” which is the reason he did not invite Netanyahu to the march.

Hollande was angry with Netanyahu for attending, and even got up to leave when Netanyahu got up to make a speech at the main synagogue in Paris to commemorate the four Jews killed.
