More Cloward-Pivan, throw away our money unnecessarily and drain the system AND get more people taking from the government. It's a win-win for fascism!

Free community college is nothing but another distraction for the obama herd.

‘C’ or better?

That’s hardly any incentive (the ONLY benefit i see to it)

I have twins that just started college- as much as I dislike government spending, if it was there I would use it- and FORCE my children to get an ‘A’ if it was required, to save me $40,000

I wholeheartedly support Community Colleges, and think that there are a whole lot of people going to four-year schools on the gov't dime for (xxxxxxx) Arts, that would be far better served getting a practical education at a Community College.

That being said, if BO supports it, this is just a deep hole to throw tax dollars into, and will have very little value. Theory is sound, reality makes it worthless.

Cloward-Piven, but also stupidity and makework.

Obama and crew confuse education with enrollment, just as they confuse insurance with access to medical care.

What they do want is to drain accumulated savings at the highest possible rate to distribute to their favored constituencies, at the same time expanding their sphere of control over all economic activity.

In their ideal world, no significant capital would ever be accumulated outside of government controlled enterprises, and no personal wealth would be accumulated except by members of the government and political establishment (which could be half to 3/4 of the population).

They say they are populist, but they are top=down command oriented, thru and thru.

Here's some excerpts from the article worth repeating:

Just 20 percent of community college first-years complete their program within 150 percent of the standard time, according to the U.S. Department of Education. And, as the Cato Institute’s Neal McCluskey found: According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, only 20 percent of community college students transfer to four-year schools, and only 72 percent of those will have finished or remained enrolled four years later. So, from what we can tell, we are looking at completion for just around 34 percent of community college students.

More than one-third of students have to take remedial courses when they enter college, as they leave high school unprepared for university-level work.

I always wanted to see some stats about those getting grants and how many actually graduated and got good paying jobs. I couldn't find the information, even with lots of googling. So here is a wee bit of info that shows the bigger picture of fraud, waste, and abuse. Those USED to be important words when I worked for the DOL decades ago.

Obama is airborne now on his way here to Knoxville Tn., to make a speech at Pellissippi State Community College touting his magnificent plan. “It’s free folks. Free I tell you!”

I have a much better idea.

Go back to really teaching fundamentals in High School.

Cram only the meaty basics into the first two years... call those years the new two year HS diploma years.

Make the last two years the equivalent of Community College.
Kids could opt for the college credit or opt for an intensive internship in several fields.

Given the meager crap that is taught to the average HS kid in four years, you could probably more than equal it with just a half year of serious schooling.

K-6 - 7&8 - 2yrs HS - 2yrs College or internship

IMO better results than a free community college plan and MUCH cheaper for the taxpayers.

Obama is doing everything he can to shut down 2-year for-profit colleges via regulation. It's called the "Gainful Employment" regulations, which were first pushed out by the Department of Education in 2012 but were struck down by a DC federal judge for being arbitrary and capricious and without a rational basis.

The regs were specifically designed to kill off at least 25% of all for-profit colleges. Indeed, the Dept of Ed actually justified in an internal memo the stated goal of eliminating 25% of all such colleges, working backwards to hit that number.

See http://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/judge-strikes-down-several-provisions-of-gainful-employment-rule/45125

So the Department of Education simply waited for the new Reid-packed DC Court and simply re-issued the same regs for 2014.

Meanwhile, 2-year for-profit colleges, which are disproportionally attended by black and other minorities for vocational training for actual jobs that employers want to hire, gets it in the neck.

With one hand Obama giveth, and with the other he taketh away.

Free or almost free Community College used to be common in many states until runaway welfare and other social policy transfer payment spending soaked up available cash.

Obama’s Community College scam highlights a major problem with the welfare state that as consistently occurred in out socialist states and one which we are seeing become increasingly prevalent in the United States.

In a welfare state, the original goal of covering the needs of the poor and needy are quickly overwhelmed with the wants of lazy and greedy and so politicians respond by pounding more and more government money down the bottomless fiscal black hole of welfare spending .

As welfare spending overwhelms the budget, it drains away the money previously spent on the traditional responsibilities of government such as maintaining road, highways, bridges, water and sewer infrastructure, public buildings and other expensive to maintain public infrastructure .

Welfare spending also guts spending on civic projects such as state government subsidized free or low cost Community College and University.

In the state I grew up education was a priority and Community College tuition was free for those needed it and tuition for the states 4 year Universities was so highly subsidized that it cost about a quarter of what it does today in inflation adjusted dollars.

Now, due to massive social spending, our college system is no longer as well subsidized and as a consequence our Community College system tuition costs are no longer free but are comparable in costs to what the tuition used to be for the four year Universities.

Tuition costs for the four year schools has just about quadrupled in inflation adjusted dollars as Social Welfare spending has gutted the state budget of funds previously used to subsidize the costs of tuition payments of in state resident students.

The money once spent of subsidized higher education is now being spent on a fraud ridden welfare spending system sees welfare recipients receiving multiple welfare payments under multiple fraudulent identities.

The roads are not in nearly in as good of condition as they use to be either.

The 20% completion stat is very misleading.

Most People that attend Community College are either Parents, Full Time employees or others that are non traditional students.

The 20% most likely are the 17-18 years olds attending to save big bucks versus taking the same courses at U. of Whomever at 3-10 times the cost.

In MA if you score high enough on the standardized tests for high school seniors, you get free tuition at Mass State colleges.

Do you get free room and board? Free lab fees? Free books?

Nope.

The scam here is that in most states, some form of this already exists. The other part is that tuition to community colleges is very, very low for people WITHOUT any assistance.

College at many schools can be picked up by joining the National Guard. Do that for a couple of years and you can transfer over to ROTC and your dates of service are better than your peers.

Back in the day (early 80’s) we had guys join the National Guard as freshmen in college, and they were commissioned in the guard mid way through their Junior year. It was hilarious watching the LTs walking down to their cars with their bars on, having all of the Senior Cadets having to salute them.

That probably doesn’t happen any more. But it was a great way to get a jump on your ROTC peers.

so if one needs a c+ average, there will be more pressure on professors for grade inflation...AND with more students, there will be demands for more employees, resulting in steep increases in costs.

and hows abotu the poor kid paying fuyll freight sittting alongside a freeloader?

The White House claims the proposal will save students $3,800 per year in tuition costs

Almost as much as what they're saving on their healthcare, after Obamacare!
