may the reference also be ... 911? I've seen it written that way a time or two, but 911 refers to the phone number for municipal emergency services. Adding the slash between the 9 and the 11 denotes that it's a date (as in, September 11th).
Of course, we Americans use DD/MM/YY, so it's actually backwards.
Man, am I digging a hole here.
