The head of Britain's domestic spy agency MI5 warned on Thursday that militant Islamists in Syria were planning "mass casualty attacks" in the West and that intelligence services may be powerless to stop them.
"We know... that a group of core al-Qaeda terrorists in Syria is planning mass casualty attacks against the West," Andrew Parker told journalists in London a day after an Islamist attack in Paris claimed 12 lives.
"Although we and our partners try our utmost, we know that we cannot hope to stop everything," he added.
Parker said that fighters returning to the West from the civil war in Syria were in danger of bringing with them a "twisted ideology" that could lead them to carry out attacks on famous landmarks at home.
Although Islamic State (IS) presented the most obvious threat, fighters aligned with the core of al-Qaeda were also a danger.
"We still face more complex and ambitious plots that follow the now sadly well-established approach of al-Qaeda and its imitators -- attempts to cause large-scale loss of life, often by attacking transport systems or iconic targets," he said.
The MI5 director general earlier said the attack against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was a "terrible reminder" of the threat facing Western nations, revealing that his agency had helped stop three terror plots "in recent months alone".
Parker called for wider powers to identify and monitor suspects, following a backlash against the security services after the extent of their snooping was exposed by Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor.

And Obama will be hammered for any strikes on USA soil, God forbid, like Bush has been for the pre 9-11-2001 memo saying “terrorists plan strike in USA.”
Last night, I became very alarmed by Greta’s interview w/Guiliani. Let me set the stage...it was one of those “spliced in” done earlier in the day pieces...Rudy was EMPATHIC “let’s the cops and FEDS go back into the Mosques.” They both looked shell shocked. I wonder what Guilianis police friends are telling him.

Israel came to my mind right away, too. I read an article on FR in the last day or so that said that many Hamas members in Palestine were switching to ISIS because Hamas was too weak. If Hamas wasn’t bad enough news for Israel, ISIS is going to be far worse. Guess Obama would say Hamas is moving from the little leagues to the “JV” team.
It has to all go at once, not separate helter-skelter hits. They have to put all of their local enemies out of business simultaneously to prevent them from uniting. (presently there is near complete disunity among them)
The present push to punish Israel for defending themselves will only accelerate the inevitable. Soros’ bid to assist the Ukraine will offer a temporary distraction for Russia soon.

DD/MM/YY is the standard in most of the rest of the world.
It can be very confusing. For instance, is 12/4/14 December 4 or April 12?
The answer: it depends on where you are.
