Curt Schilling says being a Republican cost him Hall of Fame votes
Washington Post ^ | January 7, 2015 | By Cindy Boren

Tuesday wasn’t Curt Schilling’s day to be elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame and the Boston Red Sox former great believes his politics are one reason he fell short of the necessary number of votes.

Schilling’s former teammate, Pedro Martinez, was elected, along with Randy Johnson, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio. Although he and Smoltz have similar stats, Schilling fell 240 votes short.

"I wonder what Don Mattingly did to be excluded from the HOF."

Mattingly had a relatively short, injury-riddled career, so he never accumulated big career stats - about 225 homers and 1,100 RBI's, well below the normal HOF standard for first basemen.

But he had an impressive .307 lifetime batting average, struck out very little for a modern-era slugger, was an excellent fielder, and played in New York, so he may get in the HOF some day via the old-timer's committee.

A comparable guy would be Bob Horner, the Atlanta slugger who had a few great seasons, but retired early after frequent injuries.

>>John Smoltz is a Republican, or at least associated with Republicans.

That would be my expectation as well.

I know he was part of a group that started up a private Christian school in a north Atlanta ‘burb. That’s not something one of today’s Democrats would typically do.

Simply because it is not in the article does not mean it is not true.

In 2004 Craig Biggio signed endorsed George W. Bush and signed a letter Athletes for Bush Letter.

Curt did not sign that letter.

So now, please explain to me how a Catholic Republican like Craig Biggio gets elected to the Hall of Fame?

Schilling is a Cry Baby.

Craig Biggio was never in the closet regarding his politics and publicly endorsed Bush in 2004.

Schilling is delusional.

When I was 13 my 8th grade science teacher invited me to go with his church group to Palm Beach Expos stadium where the Braves were having spring training.

The event he brought me to, was a morning breakfast with Sid Bream and John Smoltz. They discussed their lives as Christians and led a prayer for breakfast. They had all the donuts a kid could eat. At the end of course they signed anything a kid could carry. I had a Topps John Smoltz rookie card. I still have that card.

This meeting with John Smoltz and Sid Bream was one of the best childhood memories. I would easily rate it over when I went to a Dan Marino signing the previous year, because that event was not very personal.

No it is not true.

Craig Biggio endorsed President Bush and still managed to get elected to the Hall of Fame.

Yes, it probably did. The sports media is every bit as liberal as any other part of the media.

Mattingly had the worst lower back in baseball. It's unfortunate, too, that he played for the Yankees during some very lean years. Having a couple of World Series wins would have really helped his chances. He was one of the few bright spots during those years, and as a Yankee fan since forever, I can't be objective, especially when it comes to a silent and steady guy like Mattingly.

Nice! Yeah, Smoltz is a good guy, I’ve met him a few times at a Glavine charity event. Tom has been the celebrity sponsor for over 20 years for the big annual fundraiser event for a charity we’re involved with. Really good guy, his wife Chris is great too.

Schilling’s argument is that he did not get elected to the Hall of Fame in 2015 due to the fact that he is a Republican.

If that were the case, than all HoF candidates who were Repulican would also not have been elected to the Hall in 2015.

However, I can point to at least one candidate, Craig Biiggio who has not only been an outspoken Republican and was elected to the Hall in 2015.

Schilling’s argument makes no sense as it can be easily proven that Republicans were elected the the Hall of Fame in 2015.

Perhaps if Schilling had not blown through the $115 million that he made as a baseball player, he would not be whining about not getting elected to the HOF.

Curt blew $115 million in five years.

The only Hall of Fame that Schilling belongs in, would be the Democratic Hall of Fame.

Yes is read the article and it points to nothing except that Curt is a delusional cry baby.
