Tuesday wasnt Curt Schillings day to be elected to baseballs Hall of Fame and the Boston Red Sox former great believes his politics are one reason he fell short of the necessary number of votes.
Schillings former teammate, Pedro Martinez, was elected, along with Randy Johnson, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio. Although he and Smoltz have similar stats, Schilling fell 240 votes short.

It’s reported that Smoltz is a Republican, though not a very vocal one like Schilling. Smoltz also had four great seasons as a closer so that may have tipped the scales. I think he’s the only MLB pitcher to have 200 wins as a starter and 150 saves as a closer. That’s quite a feat in itself.
HOF credentials loom huge in the memoibilia circuit. No being in has cost him a lot of money.
Or maybe because he’s kind of a jerk?
Its probably true.
I am from Boston and lived there for many years including the 2004 baseball season. Boston winning the World Series without Curt Schilling would not have happened.
Not sure if you know the back story about his contribution to the series but the man went through experimental surgery a couple times. This is during the playoffs!
The man could have ended up walking around on a cane for the rest of his days - what he did was so selfless it amazed and captivated all of Boston and baseball.
He was loved, admired, respected - the toast of the town. Then he endorses Bush and the town had a complete meltdown. The liberals went completely nuts. I witnessed a young kid lose it in a pizza joint when it was on the news.
They could not handle that some one so respected and loved by them was a Conservative. They went so far as lying about his contribution to the 2004 win. The comments, sneering dismissal of the man was unbelievable. It continues to this day.
The sports radio shows blew up with nut job liberal baseball fans calling in, all worked into a rage over his endorsement of Bush. The idiot liberals I worked with all went nuts about it.
It was madness.
So, do I think that the man’s politics played a role in his being inducted into the Hall of Fame - I think its entirely possible.
I believe him. Imagine if he were CONSERVATIVE, too. ;-)
Which is it?!
Smoltz was considering running for John Linder’s Congressional seat as a Republican. He has never been political at all though publicly.
Being as overtly conservative as Schilling probably doesn’t help with those ‘Drive By’ media Sports writers. They are every bis as bad as the people on PMSNBC or at any network or newspaper editorial outfit.
Baseball sports writers are amongst the most liberal left of all “journalists”.
Not surprised.
Well, you have found one player. Good job.
It’s also a “pitcher’s year” meaning the vote got split. I’d have to check John Smoltz’ numbers but that’s a tough call.
Yeah, his work as a closer later in his career certainly made all the difference.
Looking back on it, it’s amazing to think of a pitching staff like the Braves had during the 90s with 3 Hall of Fame pitchers. Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. If they had better relief pitching and maybe a better hitter or two, they could have won 4 or 5 World Series titles, rather than one. They really were something special then. Maddux was nothing short of incredible.
One of the four elected.
The writers usually love players with all that playoff success, so I do think things about Schilling other than his production probably has something to do with it. I have no idea if his political leanings are one of those things.

I think the baseball HoF is flawed too, but at least they don’t put the equivalent of Bob Ueker in as a player. R&R hall has complete stiffs in it as rock acts.

I wonder what Don Mattingly did to be excluded from the HOF.
doesn’t the hall have some numbers in play that if exceeded the person would get in. Seems like Schilling does not have enough wins. However what about strike-outs?
“doesnt the hall have some numbers in play that if exceeded the person would get in. Seems like Schilling does not have enough wins. However what about strike-outs?”
There is no official minimum threshold for ANY stat to gain admission to the HOF. My previous post showed the stats for Schilling and Smoltz; one got in, the other didn’t, even though Schilling’s stats were a little better.
