Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, shocked some conservatives Tuesday when the first vote she cast as a new congresswoman was to keep Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, as House speaker.
Twitter erupted, with several people claiming to be in her district saying they had lost faith in their previous hero, and that she had shown her true self. Remember, this was not a vote on legislation, it was a vote for the speaker of the House.
Love, in an email to the Washington Examiner, provided some insight into why she chose to keep Boehner as GOP leader.
There were no qualified or notable campaigns for speaker within the Republican Party other than John Boehner, Love said. Casting a vote for a candidate who has not actively campaigned and does not have the support to be speaker is an indirect vote for Nancy Pelosi, and I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi.
Love also reminded voters that she is playing the long game when it comes to fighting for conservative principles.
There will be a time and a place for me to stand as a lone voice of dissension, but the vote for the speaker, is not that place, Love said. For me to be an effective congressman over the next two years it is important for me to be on the side of the elected speaker.
Sigh. Didn’t take her long to catch insider fever...
I voted for Perot. That didn’t work out so well. (Odd though - EVERYONE I know also voted for Perot!?)
I will wait to hold judgement on all of these new people to see how they vote. However, how many times have we heard “we have to take the long view, this isn’t the hill to die on, etc.” (BTW - like Patton said, iirc “...make the other bastard die for his country.”)
If you're not willing to fight for conservative principles at the beginning of your tenure then how do we know you'll fight for them later on?
So, you're on the side of a bumbling Rino idiot, Mia? That's strike one, dear.
They needed a small number of votes....to say.."WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!!"
The GOB won...the elections. The voters have HAD it, with the status quo!!!!
As do I. Considering all but perhaps one democrat was casting a vote for Pelosi, and the opposition to Boehner scattered and not substantially organized, her point was, was the miniscule chance of unseating Boehner realistic enough to roll the dice and chance the possibility of Pelosi becoming Speaker again?
I don’t know why anyone is surprised that a Romney sycophant would turn out to be a party apparatchik.
Pelosi, Boehner, what's the difference?
Really, Mia? What are the "qualifications" to be Speaker?
Casting a vote for a candidate who has not actively campaigned and does not have the support to be speaker is an indirect vote for Nancy Pelosi, and I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi.
If it were that close, you'd have a point.
It was not that close.
Vote for Boehner = NOT CONSERVATIVE. DONE!
Bullsh!t. 28 voted against Boehner. 29 were needed to oust him. Therefore, if she had voted against Boehner, she would have been one of the deciding votes that put a NEW and therefore ALLIED Speaker in charge.
Thus, her statement is a LIE. PERIOD.
She weighed that with the possibility of Pelosi garnering enough votes to become Speaker again.
Casting a vote for a candidate who has not actively campaigned and does not have the support to be speaker is an indirect vote for Nancy Pelosi, and I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi.
Not true at all. I am not even a Congressman and I was able to figure that out.
“Love also reminded voters that she is playing the long game when it comes to fighting for conservative principles.”
In other words, “we will fight next time.” She ought to fit right in with the Speaker she supported.
There will be a time and a place for me to stand as a lone voice of dissension, but the vote for the speaker, is not that place, Love said. For me to be an effective congressman over the next two years it is important for me to be on the side of the elected speaker.
OK, well then you are planning to fight “next time” while being aligned with a speaker that just fought to fund everything conservatives object for the first half of your term. Then we move right into election mode before we can “fight,” so we will once again “fight next time.”
Her response isn’t evil in support for Boehner, but it is a huge reflection of ignorance and naiveness. I would have hoped any congresswoman elect had spent some time preparing and studying. She clearly didn’t.
Oh, I’m not surprised. A little disappointed, but not surprised...
Minuscule chance? There was NO CHANCE that Boehner would be unseated. Period. We need to increase our profile before we can start booting the Dem-lite Republicans in Congress.
That doesn’t even make any sense.
Mia’s getting the same blowback on her Facebook page that all these instant collaborators are getting for supporting Boehner.
Fortunately for them, it’s only words on Facebook, for now.
Seeing the response written this way makes a bit more sense. And she is right; if we wanted to change the Speaker to a more conservative person, then we should have got that person out on November 5th and ran the campaign. We can’t wait until the weekend before to “identify” a few possibilities.

abolute power corrupts , absolutely !
