A young mother and cartoonist who survived the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris today said she had let the suspected Al Qaeda killers into the magazine office.
Corrine Rey said she had returned from picking up her young daughter from a kindergarten when she was confronted by two heavily armed men wearing balaclavas.
'I had gone to pick up my daughter at day care, arriving in front of the magazine building, where two masked and armed men brutally threatened us,' said Ms Rey, who draws under the name 'Coco'.
'They said they wanted to go up to the offices, so I tapped in the code,' said Ms Rey, referring to the digi-code security system on the inter-phone.
Miss Rey and her daughter hid under a desk, from where they saw two other cartoonists being executed.
'They shot Wolinski and Cabu,' she said, 'It lasted five minutes. I had taken refuge under a desk.
She said the men 'spoke French perfectly' and 'claimed they were 'Al Qaeda terrorists'.

In that situation I would have drawn my gun on them . I think I’m fast enough to get at least one before they get me. That’s what I would have done but I carry and France outlawed guns.That’s what I’ll do if someone pulls a gun on me .I’m not going to do what they say just draw and fire.
It’s an obvious idea, and sometimes it works. (A silent duress code.) But it’s easily gotten around by determined terrorists who are prepared for it. They just say, “This man is staying with you until we leave. Any funny business, any silent codes, you die.”
The solution (in a nation without armed private guards) is to only give the code to old paratrooper types, not to MOMS WITH BABIES, which is the same as leaving the door open.

THAT, is a very good point. They were not a candidate for a brick and mortar operation.

Attributing idealogies consistent with an American way of thinking to a French woman in this regard is not appropriate.
This very scenario may be playing out in the USA very soon...and I’m afraid the results will be much the same.
Military installations (disarm employees and servicemembers via regulation) with only one layer of defense (main gate). Once a perp is in, they have a lot of time in which to commit mayhem and destruction.
We’ve already seen this at Ft. Hood and the Navy yard...yet, nothing has changed.

Then why am I having to continue to defend my position on this thread? I have been called a coward for just expressing that this woman did nothing that any other mother would not have done.
I guess they think that if this woman had only let these terrorists shoot her daughter in the head that these guys would have just given up and gone home.
Yep those poor guys poked Christians Jews and Muslims in the eye everyday for their religion and made humor of their beliefs for a decade, as if they had placed a crucifix in urine everyday and displayed for the country to see, such funny humor, or as you say - freedom of speech. They did not deserve to die just because they were so funny.

I think the crowd is to show solidarity with each other...it’s generally done to quelch the fears of the public and not a bad idea either.

I don't have to show my bona fides. The simple fact you are upset with my pointing out the obvious demonstrates your pricked conscience.
I would not open the door. I’m not a mom with a baby, my youngest is 19. But my history, training and personality is to “attack through the ambush.” Not to give the code to allow terrorists to kill 12+ coworkers.
That’s why you don’t give the code to a mom with a baby.
Only old paratrooper types should guard the door and have the code. Folks who would just grab the first rifle barrel in their face, do or die, hell or high water.
The terrorists are willing to die for their sick murder cult. We must be prepared to die to defend civilization. Sometimes that means hard choices.

I don’t understand the mentality of “surrender everything right away.” You don’t understand the mentality of an old paratrooper.
This is why moms with babies should not be door guards at known terror targets, or have the door codes.
Next time, get an old paratrooper. Then the story is “three police, three terrorists, and an old paratrooper were killed today.”
And up on heaven, he’s smiling, and the other old soldiers are welcoming him to the bar with back slaps and drinks all around.
