Submission, the latest controversial work by Michel Houellebecq, was featured on this week's Charlie Hebdo cover - but its author denies the book is Islamophobic.
The controversial novel published today in France about a Muslim running the country according to the laws of conservative Islam has been defended by its author against claims it is Islamophobic.
Submission, by celebrated French author Michel Houellebecq, was featured on the front cover of this week's Charlie Hebdo, the magazine attacked by terrorist gunmen on Wednesday.
Speaking prior to the terror attack on the magazine's Paris headquarters, in which at least 12 people were killed, Houellebecq said the book "was not taking sides".
He denied that the novel - which has triggered furious debate prior to its release over whether it is Islamophobic - was a "Christmas present" to Marine Le Pen, the far-Right Front National leader.

Also to note, some personal observations watching French TV: Two police officers were protecting Charlie Hebdo, one is dead, the other is critically wounded (other reports have him dead). Authorities told people in the general vicinity of Charlie Hebdo to barricade themselves in place (and cower). Does this sound familiar to what happens in our country? Do we look for government to protect us? And when it fails to do so is the instant reaction to hide?
My own gut instinct is 180 degrees from this. I'd holster my 1911 under my left arm, my M-9 under my right arm, grab a bag of 5.56 and carry my M4-forgery. Hopefully there would be other men in the neighborhood that could form a squad and take care of business.
Given the circumstances, it was probably the right thing to do. Can't do much with your bare hands against AK-wielding assailants.
The bare hands part is the problem.

Going forward, they can make it compulsory for every adult to carry a gun. At that moment, however, nothing else could be done.
The obvious solution to workplace violence like this is to ban all publications insulting to the Holy Prophet - and perhaps kill the authors in advance to save those who might be offended the trouble. I expect our President will offer that advice to his French counterpart later today.
These muslims just made this book that would have been read by only a few a massive seller reaching audiences it would never have touched if they had not killed. I hope it is extremely islamophobic.
