The supposedly routine reelection of House Speaker John Boehner is becoming a dramatic repeat of the GOPs December split over immigration, where the partys populist base was jammed by the business-backed leadership.
By mid-Monday, at least 10 defectors said they will vote against Boehner for speaker. A new poll was released showing overwhelming opposition to GOP leaders funding President Barack Obamas executive amnesty. And the House switchboard was jammed by Republicans who are urging their members to vote against Boehner.
The Daily Caller was on hold for 25 minutes, but the switchboard operator did not answer the phone.
Boehner needs to win 218 votes in the Tuesday ballot, which is scheduled for midday.
If Boehner does not win 218 votes from the 246-member GOP caucus, his critics hope it will attract new Republican candidates for his job. If that were to happen, the process could precipitate intense and lengthy negotiations among the GOP legislators until they can come up with a compromise candidate to replace Boehner.
Boehners allies are downplaying the crisis. Oklahoma Rep. Tom Cole told MSNBC Monday that the debate is distracting attention from the GOPs support for the Keystone XL pipeline. Cole favors an increase of foreign guest workers in place of Americans.
Boehners office touted his focus on economic issues. The GOP is wasting no time getting started, kicking off the first week of the new American Congress with action on three bipartisan jobs bills, said an afternoon statement, which did not mention the immigration issue.
The amnesty issue is driving the pushback against Boehner...

I base my impression on how the Independents vote in congress.
But thinking about it, independent voters have swung elections to the conservative side at times.
thank you for your feedback. i’ll register independent today, unless a conservative is chosen.
“I’ve found the opposite to be true. Independents (registered) in my neck of the woods are fiercely Conservative.”
That’s great. It was the independents in Congress I was thinking of. It does seem to vary with each election how the Independents go. As more if us drop out of the GOP, that’ll make independents more conservative.
Thank you for your feedback. i’ll register independent today, when cry baby wins. Unless the HOR grows a spine.
“I’m a “DTS” (decline to state) otherwise known as an Independent.”
Would that be ‘other’? That’s the only other option on the voter form in mexifornia. ‘Independent’ is also listed.
Appreciate your clarification and will agree the independents, in congress, are democrats without the democrat label.
It may have changed, but when I registered in CA, I chose “Decline to state”.
I’ve been called by the rats, greens, commies, etc. whenever primary season rolls around as a result of that registration...I even engaged in Operation Chaos and “voted” for Hillary over 0bama in 2008.
Understood and it’s a valid comparison in that regard.
No disrespect to the importance of energy, but undoing executive amnesty is a wee bit bigger because of the long-range ramifications for demographics, culture, and the domestic economy. Undoing Obamacare (esp. the Individual Mandate) is bigger, esp. as many don't have an extra $2,300 lying around as a "tip". I have no interest in "moving forward" with a broken system.
Get Boehner OUT OF THERE.
Vote is imminent: FIND AND CONTACT YOUR REP right now!
Bounce him!
Great Post and so right on multiple points!
For my part, at 60+, I like what Thomas Paine said in the Revolutionary War. Some Freepers may not know that some historians give full credit to Thomas Paine for providing the verbal stimulus to light the Revolutionary fire and keep it lit.

where can we find how our reps voted?
For future speaker wannabes:I guess if you're running to win, don't 'throw your hat in the ring' 3 days prior to vote time.Actually plan, organize, fundraise, and RUN.
