Most illegal immigrants from southern Mexico and Central America are only marginally literate, if that, even in Espanol. That's the dirty little secret that is never talked about. Their kids have to be taught in Spanish so they can become literate before they can start to learn Ingles.

Lots of illegals are coming from so far in the bush they don’t even speak Spanish. They speak Mayan dialects.

From Southern Mexico they may not even know more than rudimentary Spanish. The languages in some areas is not Spanish but Indian tongues.

Very true; I asked one (in Spanish) the word for “pretzel” and she replied with the word for cookie. Granted, they aren’t know for eating pretzels, but she had no clue (and had been here for years - legally - and working for a restaurant).
