Many illegal immigrants at a Northern California DMV reportedly were failing the written exam when applying for driver’s licenses on Friday.
Under the AB 60 law that Governor Jerry Brown (D) signed in 2013 and took effect at the start of 2015, illegal immigrants were able to apply for driver’s licenses on Friday. And nearly 1.4 illegal immigrants are expected to apply for licenses in California in the next three years.
At a DMV in south Sacramento, Veronica Oropeza, a 28-year-old illegal immigrant who has reportedly been driving without a license for six years, reportedly failed her written exam twice.
“Nobody’s passing,” she told the Sacramento Bee in Spanish.

there are only 18 MULTIPLE GUESS questions in California DMV written tests. (If you flunk, you can take it two more times the same day without additional charge.) And, it is available in many different languages, too.

I understand that some go home and study. some take it over.
i have seen several versions of the test.
there are several ‘tricky’ questions which really don’t test road rules knowledge so much as an expert understanding of sentence grammar and English vocabulary. I am SURE some lawyers are going to be challening said questions before long, on behalf of the illegal immigrant license applicants.
It is inevitable.
But anyway... the biggest problem on the roads is not people who don’t know the rules.....and it is not people who have language difficulties. It is the ten or fifteen percent of absolutely Ahole reckless jerkO’s who try to ram you, or shove you off the road..when you are proceeding in full accordance with rules and safety factors.
There has arisen a percentage of very very very very dangerous drivers out there, not just the ones who make an occasional mistake or can’t read informational signs in English, but some who deliberately try to kill other people.
What can be done? Nothing in ANY license test is going to be of any real help.
Even the traffic ticket schools (supervised by the state dmv) and the driver ed courses (again, supervised by the state dmv) are emphasizing more than ever the “driver attitude behind the wheel” stuff. Good try, but won’t help much. Anyone with even two gray cells can figure out the correct test answer is “do not try to maim or kill the guy in the next lane”.......................and then they just go out and do it .... its a sport with them, its for FUN, you see.

the state dmv driver test is a total waste of time, frankly.

There are actually three kinds of very dangerous drivers today.
Not really the one who occasionally makes a mistake, doesn’t signal a lane change, or goes 7 mph too fast.
Not even the one who can’t handle English.
BUT
1. the Ahole JerkO who delberately tries to run other cars off the road or smash them (more of these in recent years, used to be there were zero)
2. the drugged-up (or boozed-up) driver (I recall a state safety class where the instructor was making a valiant effort to convince the audience to not drive under the influence... and at the class recess break the students went out to the parking lot and shot up (and smoked mj) for 20 minutes)
3. the immigrant...not from Mexico but instead from the PRC....who usually drives 15 mph and always stops whereever she is at, in whatever lane, to decide where to steer next ‘safely’....................................but who magically shifts into her alter ego of DEMOLITION LILY in the Costco Parking Lot. She will race 96 mph thru the parking lanes to grab the ONE space nearer to the Costco entry door that she wants. No matter what other vehicles are in her way, she will veer right around them and shove her Lexus (almost always) right into the space she’s eyeballed ... entering it at 75 mph and somehow, Lord knows how, managing to brake to a stop before smashing into the Costco wall.
go figure. NONE of the above chief danger types are ever going to be screened out or prevented from driving, with any sort of written test. No matter how the nice DMV workers may try, it is a gross waste of time. About all it does is to collect fees from us, which others here have pointed out already.
PS: my insurance broker told me that over a third of the drivers in San Franciscko are uninsured, too.

Talk about cluelessness. They’re supposed to be arranging stand-ins to take the test, the same way they’ve always done. Maybe Luis Gutierrez can advise them how to “pass the test” on his national pre-presidential campaign tour.
Very true; I asked one (in Spanish) the word for “pretzel” and she replied with the word for cookie. Granted, they aren’t know for eating pretzels, but she had no clue (and had been here for years - legally - and working for a restaurant).
