$895 to repair it. Needed a cleaning, new mainspring, new case tube & crystal. The only reason I spent that much is because it was my father’s. He bought it for $100 at a PX when he was in the Army in 1954.

What you spent to have it serviced is about what he paid for it, adjusted for inflation. Pretty extravagant purchase at the time, over a month's salary depending on his rank. Sounds like he got his money's worth of use out of it though.

I paid $800 to have my submariner serviced last year. The first time since my wife bought it for me 25 years ago. She paid $1800 and now the same watch is $8800. I wear it every day and had it serviced once and it kept its value. tops in my book. You did a great thing with your dads with it will last at least another 50 years with acouple more services.

Did you have it done by Watch Repairs USA in New York by chance?

I ask because they’re currently working on a vintage (mid ‘60s) Bulova for me. Doing a complete overhaul including rebuilding the self wind mechanism. None of the local shops wanted to work on it because they couldn’t get parts. Apparently Watch Repairs USA is able to make their own parts.

It’s expensive though. The amount I paid for the watch is a fraction of what the repair is going to cost. But it’s a great watch, and they’re going to put quite a bit of labor into it, and I figured their time is worth something, so I did it.
