What defines gender? Is it biology, the heart and mind, or some combination of both? As the debate surrounding transgender children swirls, one girl is sharing her personal story in the hope that she can help others.
Jazz Jennings was born a boy, but started to show leanings toward a feminine side at only 15 months old. By age 2, Jazz started to verbalize her feelings that "she was a girl," and by 5 she was one of the youngest people ever to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria ― a persistent unease with the characteristics of one's gender, accompanied by a strong identification with the opposite gender.
After the diagnosis, Jazz's incredibly supportive family decided to embrace her inner feelings and allowed her to start transitioning from male to female while she was only in kindergarten. Although she was teased on occasion, Jazz maintained her outgoing personality and never let anyone stand in the way of her confidence about her gender identity.
Now, at 14, Jazz has co-authored an illustrated memoir aimed at children called "I Am Jazz." The book chronicles the early years of Jazz's life, from her diagnosis to her struggles at school, and it's not just for kids in the LGBTQ community but for anyone who feels like they don't fit in.

Complicated issue but I think at least some of it starts with the kid’s name. What the hell is ‘Jazz’? Name the child a boy’s name for Christ’s sake.
I was just eating lunch. Was.

“Remember when blowing a tranny meant serious car trouble?”
Redundant

I guess they werent crazy, they were just liberals.
"Jazz" is not only not a boys name, it's not a name at all. Mom and Dad put displaying their cleverness over the welfare of their son.
Anybody recall Lieutenant Hurwitz?
Maybe they thought Jizz was inappropriate?
What defines gender?
Do you have a Y chromosome? Yes or No
Do they say these things on purpose........?
Surely your son still loves good music!!!
What effect did the ludicrous name “Chastity” have on Miss Bono’s personality? While it’s true that Italians sometimes come up with names like this, it is inappropriate for Americans. That kid must have gone through hell.
Ridiculous. No one “knows in their heart” that they are some other sex.
All I know is I was born with the full set of male equipment. And from about the age of 13 on, they’ve done a mighty fine job of never letting it slip my mind which gender I am.
Who do you blame for the ones like in this article that starts long BEFORE they go to school?
This is one that you can't blame on public schools!
So I'm not really a lesbian trapped in a man's body?
In my heart and mind, I have the body of a professional athlete and I demand that society, especially women, recognize me as such.
Such names were very common among the Puritans. But we've kind of grown out of it.
Indeed. Correct.
While something may occur naturally, like a birth defect or the brain wired wrongly, that means it is naturally occurring. . .but it is not normal.
My son was born with a heart defect so we can say he was ‘born that way,’ but at the same time we can say his heart is not normal.
This distinction between natural and normal is lost on the left.
Calling sex gender is fundamentally a category error.
