#8 – The Village People: “YMCA”

Homosexuality had gone mainstream in the Seventies, and AIDS was a mystery just starting to rear its ugly head in the gay community. Men went to bathhouses, had as many sex partners as they wished and thought the fun would never end. These guys epitomized the whole ethos of the fabulously, flamboyantly gay subculture.

Egad! I won’t listen to it or I’ll have it stuck in my brain all night! LOL!

I never knew all the undertones of the song. I just knew it was very annoying. LOL!

When I first heard that song on the radio, I thought it was an ad for the Young Men’s Christian Association.

And yet their light hearted tunes, esp. YMCA, played at many wedding receptions, probably did more to “mainstream” homosexuality than any play by what’s his name or amicus curie brief filed by the aclu or any of the rest. (Sorry, I’m sloppy and tired and too lazy to google, but I trust you’ll take my point.)

Not saying this is good or bad, just that it is so.
