They said they don’t want him there. To ignore the sentiments of the family for his own political gain, DeBlasio appears selfish and insensitive.
If he goes, he makes the service all about him. Let the family grieve in peace, then go about what you can to make amends.
This is going to backfire, just like the Wellstone Memorial Service/Pep Rally did.
A group of retired police (so the active duty police won’t face retribution) have offered to make sure the Mayor’s motorcade never makes it to either funeral. We’ll see what happens. If the family agrees for him to attend, that’s one thing, but if de Blasio insists on going against the family’s wishes, he is an absolute scumbag (above & beyond what he already is) and should be KEPT out ... retired, active duty, family, whatever it takes.
The union said they didn’t want him at cop funerals. So far as we’ve heard, Ramos’s widow hasn’t said that. She, in fact, greeted deBlasio in her home, and made some statement that sounded like it was written by a mayoral aide.
Nary a word from the Officer Liu’s family, nor visit made to them, either. There’s a larger hispanic constituency in NYC than there is Asian. Or Mrs. Liu might just be less open to a deBlasio than Mrs. Ramos.
