In his first interview since he announced Tuesday that he was actively exploring the possibility of running for president, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said he thought he could persuade the Republican base to support his position on immigration. Bush has advocated for Republicans to soften their tone on immigration, and has repeatedly called on Congress to address the issue with comprehensive legislation. A candidate gets to persuade, Bush said to Miamis NBC 6. I think theres a compelling case that if we want to be young and dynamic again, we have to make legal immigration easier than illegal immigration, that we control our borders, enforce the laws. But that we embrace our immigrant heritage and allow our country to take off. You gotta do both.

I agree only in the sense that illegal immigration should be as close to impossible as possible. Then legal would be easier. Illegals should be deported, after being fingerprinted and DNA-swabbed to prevent any legal re-entry for life. Illegals who want asylum should already have applied before being apprehended, or their claim should be presumed to be fraudulent. Employers of illegals who do not make a good faith effort to determine legal status should be fined so much that they will never employ an illegal again. Illegals who commit additional crimes should have their sentence doubled for illegal status, and then be deported.
This problem can and should be solved. Illegals should not have an advantage over those who apply for legal immigration. Then we can work on legal immigration.
In the past when republicans talked about gaining support from the republican base they were talking about Conservative Republicans, I don’t believe that’s who they have in mind anymore.
Yeah. I wish I could have been there when he asked McCain how to win so I could look confused, point, and say, “He lost. You remember that, right?”
Has Jeb stated his position on closing the border - perhaps before any other action is taken?
Did he not get the No Mor Bushes message?
He's right, but only if the legislation is proposed in steps, with no step allowed before
the implementation of the previous step.
Step one : Physically secure the entire border.
Step 2 : Confirm the efficacy of the physical border barrier, and its continued maintenance.
Step 3 : Now we can talk about any other additional steps necessary to apply our existing immigration laws.
