Has there ever been a Yankee Republican that was worth a damn?

Calvin Coolidge (Vermont); Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. (Massachusetts); Bruce Barton (New York); Hamilton Fish, III (New York); Joseph Martin (Massachusetts). If you want to extend the Yankee definition to the upper Midwestern states largely settled by New England, you can count Ronald Reagan (northern Illinois); William Howard Taft and Robert Taft (Ohio); H.R. Gross (Iowa); Howard Buffett (Nebraska, of New York born parents); Dan Quayle (Indiana).

Thanks for that list. Some of those names go way WAY back.

I know there are solid conservatives who live on the East Coast. Trouble is, there are so few of them and so even when a Republican is elected - they are far left of moderate.
