Police stormed a cafe in central Sydney early Tuesday where a gunman held more than a dozen hostages for more than 16 hours, firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades moments after captives were seen fleeing the buidling in terror.
A scene of pandemonium erupted in the early morning just minutes after hostages started emerging from the cafe on their own or in small groups.
Eleven hostages were reportedly accounted for after the police raid - Nine News reported. Sky News reported four people were injured. Live TV footage showed at least two people being taken away on stretchers but there was no confirmation of details.
One hostage was seen being carried out of the building. The woman seemed quite distressed and in a lot of pain as blood gushing from her legs.
After the raid, a bomb disposal robot was seen entering the cafe.
The dramatic end stage of the siege came as the gunman holding the remaining captives was revealed as a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis.
Monis is a 49-year-old man living in southwest Sydney, but is originally from Iran and a self-proclaimed sheik, and also sent hate mail to the families of Australian dead soldiers between 2007 and 2009, according to The Daily Telegraph.

“Id imagine that the concept of carrying a concealed weapon has occurred to many many Australians in the last 16 hours” — actually No it didn’t. But not letting islamists with dubious trackrecord did; especially those seeking political asylum or refugee status. Deporting them when they got serious criminal history is another option. As a norm we don’t play ‘cowboys & indians’ in Australia.
It is a common term for opposite sex partner too, at least according to the British TV series I watch on DVD. I think it covers everything such as spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend or whatnot.

I heard a local politician from New South Wales say that people are talking about it, and that they’re beginning to think that the bad guys shouldn’t be the only ones who carry guns. So, at least the dialogue has begun.
Will see what happens... but it’s a longer term thing here if it were to happen..
Its a common sense matter. Bad Guys who mean to do people harm will always be in possession of the means to do so. Tools of the trade.
Our job is to stop them with equal or greater weapons.

I made essentially the same point last night in the live thread about this incident. The killers are the fundamentalists (not the radicals) of islam... promoting thier "religion" the way they have for centuries...by violence and intimidation.
Btw, if i ever had an islamist in my or my family’s vicinity, threatening us, s/he will a have a lesson without a gun.
