I never really made the connection before but when I was a kid, probably 32 or 33 years ago, I was walking in my lily white crime free suburban neighborhood and a couple of older black teens were coming towards me. They were likely from Camden, NJ, one of the worst places in America for violent crime, and less than a mile from my town. But I thought nothing of it.
We passed and they went about half a block and then one apparently turned and ran towards me and punched me in the back of the head right below my ear. I went down hard, face first; not knocked out but badly scraped up from the pavement. The two teens walked off, laughing. I was about 12 years old.
I think the so-called knockout game isn't new.
