Yes and no. If by “have” you mean own, they can, but they have to go through an unpleasant licensing process and consequently very few Aussies own firearms. If by “have” you mean carry, then pretty much they can’t unless you’re a farmer on your own land, a target-shooter at the range, or have a security-related job at which the government deems you should be armed.

I am Australian, I own guns. So do somewhere around a million other Australians.
But handguns which would have been useful in this situation are rare.
