Their power ebbing, Senate Democrats launched a last-minute drive Saturday to confirm roughly 20 of President Barack Obamas nominees, and several Republicans blamed tea partyer Ted Cruz for creating an opening for the outgoing majority party to exploit.
The weekend session unfolded as measures that could prevent government operating funds from running out at midnight remained in limbo. Even so, there was little apparent concern about a shutdown that Democratic and Republican leaders said they wanted to avoid.
Republicans tried to slow the nomination proceedings, but several voiced unhappiness with Cruz, R-Texas. One likened his actions to his role in precipitating a 16-day partial government shutdown more than a year ago.
I've seen this movie before, and I wouldnt pay money to see it again, Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., said between seemingly endless roll calls.

Taking flack? You’re over the target.
Any opening was created by the GOPe for foisting this crap sandwich on us.
Those Republicans who make such a claim are the ones that threw the barn door open when they had the opportunity to stop the long-term funding for the illegal amnesty and Obama Care. Going to bite my tongue before I say something that's impolitic ...
” Those Republicans who make such a claim are the ones that threw the barn door open when they had the opportunity to stop the long-term funding for the illegal amnesty and Obama Care.”
NAILED it.
Quisling RINOS, eat yo peas!
Can anyone name a representative or senator that was NOT elected because of the shutdown? Maybe another shutdown will result is a Republican sweep in 2016?
Added Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz.: “I fail to see what conservative ends were achieved.” Not Letting the Ruling Class SELL OUT the American People without a Fight. Yes This includes YOU.
He also said he was worried about what the events means for next year,
Incumbent RINO’S have just been Warned, that’s what it means
Reid is using the nuclear option to force thru as many Zero nominees as possible and RINOS blame Cruz?
Wow.
We're all gonna die!
P.S. We know who's going to end up paying for all of this $hit.
Isakson has a primary in 2016.
Flake voted to kill Assad and help ISIS in Syria because the pushback was shoving his amnesty bill into 2014 poliitcal year.
Early on, Flake and Rubio both admitted they wanted to ram through congressional amnesty in 2013.
uhhh....about that negative impact of Obama shutting down parks and monuments on Columbus Day weekend. (that’s about the only thing that shut down). The Republicans just had a victory of unimaginable historic proportions.
The GOPe Corporatist ass kissers are all jealous that Cruz is looking like the Hero so they try to paint him as the goat.
Due to strenuous objections and roadblocks by the GOP, the Senate hearings for Obama's nominee for head of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), and 20 other of his most controversial nominees, were held up just long enough this past week, that time finally ran out and so their hearings won't resume until next year, when under the new GOP majority.
Yet Cruz & Lee's forcing of this weekend's Senate session, done only for the purpose of making a statement against illegal immigration, is resulting in the controversial Immigration chief's nomination, among 20 other awful nominations, being pushed through Dingy Harry's Brave New Filibuster-Free World.
Go figure.
These RINOs are insufferable. I hope each and every one is primaried and loses. The clods are hating each American Citizen who voted for them. No excuses RINOs...you are so then. RINO/Whig is your name.
Liar, Reed was going to do the nomination next week anyways.
Due to Republican objections, Reid will be forced to hold a series of procedural votes on each nominee, rather than a simple yes-or-no vote. Speaking on the Senate floor Saturday, Reid criticized Republicans for feigning anger over the nominees despite having known for weeks that he intended to hold a vote on them before the end of the lame-duck session.
That's pitiful.
I'll take a Lie Detector test against Harry any day.
I couldn't care less what he claimed when he criticized Republicans today. If you take anything Reid says at face value, you're a fool.
Sorry liar is and was the wrong word. If you honestly believe the MYTH that Harry Reid was not going to push through these nominations and did not have it on his schedule for this week already then you are definitely not a liar. Sorry.
Well, got to go, I have to brush down my unicorn before Santa gets here. I just wish the pixies would leave me alone.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) warned senators that they might have to stay in session through the week of Dec. 15.
In comments on the floor, Reid said he hoped the Senate could avoid staying at work the week before Christmas, but warned an additional week of work was possible.
We have a lot to do and not a lot of time to accomplish it, Reid said. We might have to be here the week before Christmas, however Mr. President, not into the Christmas holiday. Both the House and Senate are scheduled to recess for the year by Dec. 12, but Reid said that if the Senate fails to pass bills funding the government, reauthorizing defense spending, extending tax deductions and clearing nominations, he would extend the session through the week of Dec. 15-19.
Reid had been working with House leaders on a tax deal, but last week the White House torpedoed that with a veto threat.
So far the Senate has scheduled only votes on nominations, but the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) or a tax extenders bill could come to the floor later this week. The Senate is also waiting for the House to pass a bill that would prevent a government shutdown after Dec. 11.
