OTTAWA, Dec 12 (Reuters) The Royal Canadian Navy on Friday imposed an almost total ban on sailors drinking at sea, after a warship had to be recalled from an international exercise because inebriated crew members got into trouble.
Sailors had hitherto been allowed to drink off duty. Now, they will only be able to sample alcohol on special occasions such as Christmas, if the captain gives permission.

Terrible end to a tradition - but the fact that a ship had to be recalled for such a reason is very disturbing.
My guess is it will spread throughout the other Royal Navies soon enough either for good reason, or just because of an increasingly PC ideal.

It is my understanding that many RAN ships are now voluntarily dry.

I figured there’d be some dumbass making a crack about the Canadian military. Here’s something for you to chew on: on a per capita basis, no country in the last 100 years has shed more sweet patriot blood in the defense of freedom than Canada - including the United States. So sod off.

Absolutely. The RCN contributions during WWII, for example, were quite significant.

I’m thinking that the transition to a ‘dry’ navy will result in the next craft brewing revolution...

That’s nice, but it doesn’t change the fact that currently, the Canadian military is totally insignificant ~ less than 70,000 active personnel IIRC. And a big reason for that is because you saps know you can lean on us down here to protect you.

And of that 70,000, the RCN has only 8500 regular personnel.
If you don't want cracks, get a bigger navy.

Canada has a tiny number of patriots, I used to be a member of the Canadian Airborne Association and pay some attention to them.
Texas produced 16,000 active duty in 2004 alone, Canada had 28,000 enlistments from 2003 to 2008.
