After passing the Senate by unanimous consent on Monday, it seemed as if the FOIA Improvement Act would become lawa nearly identical version passed the House earlier this year. Today, however, it was up to Speaker of the House John Boehner to allow a vote on the bills final passage before the House adjourned this week. Instead, it was held at the desk, meaning Boehner may have just killed FOIA reform.
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a law, signed in 1966, that gives U.S. citizens the right to access information from the federal government. Through FOIA, journalists and citizens alike have uncovered stories like the U.S. government turning down hundreds of millions of dollars in Katrina aid, the Pentagon ignoring a tip alleging 135 cases of fraud amounting to nearly $200 million, shortages in funding hampering cleanup at hazardous waste sites and 17,000 bridges failing to be inspected on schedule, to name a few.
It is an uniquely American act, but it is a tool that needs to be continually sharpened, says Nate Jones, the Freedom of Information Act Coordinator at the George Washington University's National Security Archive. The government is pretty good at giving information to people it wants to give, but the Freedom of Information Act is really a gem that allows the public to have a fighting chance to get the information from the government that they want.

“Oh boy, Elijah Cummings is all for it! He who gets his marching orders from Valerie Jarrett.
Hell, thats reason enough alone to kill it. HA!”
If it was only Cummings I would agree. But the letter you refer to (post 37 ) was signed and headlined by Daryl Issa - Chairman of House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and only co-signed by Cummings. It’s rare event but sometimes good things for America can be politically unanimous opinions. This is what makes Boehner’s actions so frustrating because it represents overreach.
Boehner supposedly allowed the same banker lobbies, that we are now back on the hook for on their risky derivative investments, to kill it. But then what should we expect, a government that actually works for transparency for the citizens? Never forget these are the same global bankers that I am still as a Tea Partier PO’d about, because they got to live very high on the hog off our debt, bailouts and Fed printing presses, while the impact to our financial system and economy is still very questionable.
No sale...Many out here, maybe you too, have been hoodwink, had, hustled and con’d.
The Democrat/Republican show is the biggest con-job on the planet.
In the interest of respect make that Darrell not Daryl. Never could spell that name.
To get onto The Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping List you must threaten to report me to the Mods if I don't add you to the list...
I find it fascinating that the blowback against Boehner’s tabling of the bill is coming almost exclusively from left of center publications. Where’s the blowback from conservative writers and publications? I’ve been checking off and on all day, it’s yet to materialize.
What’s the hurry? Why now? Because the left knows the current bill that was tabled was the closest they could get to what they wanted. A new Congress will be able to put more steel and spine in the bill giving more access to you and me to the truth. The left abhors such a notion. But the newly elected stronger conservative wing of the R gang can raise that torch and shine that light.
Since these bills have been receiving unanimous bi-partisan votes in the Senate and the House already, who’s to say a stronger tougher bill wouldn’t be able to muster at least a 2/3rds majority to override an Obama veto. Could that be what has folks like Cummings and Leahy coming down with the vapors?
What am I selling?
I was just giving my opinion.
I apologize...Didn’t mean to be harsh...
Take care...
No problem at all.
Worth reading.
Immigration and Usurpation - Real reason why your Senator wants this immigration amnesty bill
Boehner was never a Republican. He was a Democrat all along. A DNC plant.
Ask yourself this... Why are there so many RINOs but so few DINOs? How beneficial (and extremely easy) would it be for a party to infiltrate the opposition with its own loyal members, who then run and get elected to a congressional seat as a member of the opposition party, in order to undermine opposition voting on key issues in the House or Senate?
It’s just too much of a coincidence for me; i.e., that it happens over and over and over again that a Republican suddenly goes full-bore RINO and starts voting like a democrat just when it will hurt conservatives the most.
It doesn’t appear to me to be the case that RINOs are simply individuals who were compromised by money or scandal; we all know democrats are just as dirty or dirtier than Republicans and just as susceptible to those pressures as Republicans.
Yes, I may wear a tinfoil hat, but it’s made out of special tin: It lets in the light. ;-)
I can't tell the difference....
I’ve been saying for a long time that what’s wrong with this country is we’ve elected dirty people who are easily blackmailed. They get to D.C. and get addicted to the perks and being treated like royalty. Then they start to believe they are above the law and start doing things they shouldn’t do. Then they are blackmailed.
Every now and then they take one down. Condiff comes to mind. That’s just to make us suckers believe they’re honest.
Elitist RINOs have secured their next (short) term in COngress by rolling over and telling their base to “ Eat cake.”
Result? Goodbye to ANY chance for the RINO led GOP of winning in 2016. The GOP conservative base stays home, one more time. They will only vote to elect TP candidiates. The GOP conservative base will not vote for another establishmentarian GOP RINO.
The GOP in its ppresent configuration will never again for a generation win Congress or the presidency.
Say hello to President Hillary Clinton.
Read post 36. So you’ve been here a while and your still a sheep and you want to insult someone else by calling them a noob?
Define insult as you would relate it to the words “noob” and “sheep” in your post.
Val told him she’d make him cry if he didn’t table it.
Ted Cruz is a Senator. He can’t be speaker of the house.
So now we know for sure that Johnny Boy is really just a Nancy(Pelosi) girl
Its time to start holding our congressmen accountable for voting for that corrupt fool.
We need a new group defined by our opposition to corrupt politicians like John, and any fool that votes for them. Better to loses a RINO majority than continue under theses pointlessly corrupt terms.
