There was a reason the Japanese garrison would start out with 20,000 troops and at the end there would be a literal handful of survivors.

Actually the the Japs would commit Hara Kari so very few actually surrendered.

This is very true. But I still remember reading about the ‘prisoners to the rear’ trick.
