I’m curious what you expect the police to do when they get a person with a gun call in an area like that?

Approach with caution. They're supposed to regard the safety of everyone - not just themselves.

Okay, then they should allow the suspect to fire off rounds in the direction of whatever is behind the officers, an appartment building, business, just whatever happens to be there right?

Should they perhaps pull up thirty yards away?

Yes.

Why?  They wanted to take immediate action with that individual.  Already you're revealing you don't quite grasp what "person with a gun" means.  You want that person disarmed as rapidly as possible.  If that means taking them out, then that's what it means.  Why should some family behind the officers have to lose one or more of their loved ones?.

Should they allow the person to take a hostage?

Didn't happen and wasn't going to happen.

If he's thirty yards away and bolts, you have no idea what will happen.  Thirty yards is 90 feet.  That kid could retrace his steps and wind up back at the playground with other kids in danger.  He could run in other directions too, enter a home, take hostages.  You never know.

Should they perhaps let them get a few rounds off before they get serious?

Depends. When a cop shoots first and then asks questions he's a "hero". When a civilian does it he goes straight to jail.

Cry me a river.  Lesson, don't play with objects that look like a gun at a playground, and then do anything other than get on your stomach on the ground when officer pull up.

DO NOT pull something that looks like a weapon out of your belt and expect salutations and a conversation for you efforts.

Yeah, cause kids shouldn't be playing cops and robbers - they might get shot by a real cop.

Seriously, a 12 year old, like my son, gets shot for playing a game and you revel in it.

It means just that. I carry a gun. Lots of people carry guns. That doesn’t mean they can roll up on me and open fire before I have a chance to comply.

You keep pulling hypotheticals out to justify this. Anything can be justified with hypotheticals.

What if it is totally innocent? What if the person making the call is just an anti gun nut who blew up his story to get a quicker response?

What if cops actually analyzed what was going on, instead of rolling up ready to rock and roll, and determined that will be the outcome?

“Okay, then they should allow the suspect to fire off rounds in the direction of whatever is behind the officers, an appartment building, business, just whatever happens to be there right?”
Ya, because your precious cops are so concerned about what backstops their rounds. /sarcasm.

“Why? They wanted to take immediate action with that individual.”
That’s part of the problem. They want action. They got sold on Robocop movies and thought it would be an adventure. Then it is boring, so they make the adventure.

“Why should some family behind the officers have to lose one or more of their loved ones?.”
Why should we put up with cops constantly killing people who were not a danger? 1/4 of all shootings are of people not armed.

But laying on one's stomach is the best posture for firing, where there is no cover. Any time police arrive to find people on their stomachs, they should use their lightning fast reactions, accuracy and authority to kill them all. It would be the safest way to enforce the de facto law in such cases.

My brothers played with cap guns, real gunpowder that goes bang.

No cop ever came screeching up to us, but if one had, we wouldn’t have reacted sensibly - you literally cannot think when something like that happens - either you freeze or you move on impulse.

It was a different time and place but people’s reactions to being rushed and yelled at don’t change.
