The European Court of Human Rights says France violated the rights of Somali pirates who had attacked French ships and has ordered compensation for them over judicial delays.
The nine Somali pirates should get thousands of euros because they were not immediately brought before a French judge, the court ruled.
One is to get 9,000 euros (£7,000) and the others sums of up to 7,000 euros.
The judges faulted France for keeping them in custody for an extra 48 hours.
The pirates had held French citizens hostage after seizing a French-flagged cruise ship and a French yacht in 2008.

As a former USCG officer, I can tell you that under international law, piracy is considered a crime against humanity. All countries have jurisdiction, and the crime is considered capital.
I would pay this fine off to the Somalis in lead, or uranium.
Entire somalia should be a glass parking lot.
The Russians are much better at this sort of thing than the Frogs.

Wait until the Nazis start start suing the Allied countries. It could get very expensive! /sarc
Resist France, resist this stupid law.
Wow!
FU ECHR.
It’d be funny if Reagan were still around:
“Spin up three minutemen out of Minot for the coast of Somalia, would ya? And get Dale Chihuly on the line. Put him on an Aurora spy plane and make sure you pack him a space suit. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with out there. He needs to be there while the surface of the country is still liquid! Make it happen.”
Europeans are psychotic. You’d get more justice from a monkey in a wig.
Time to scrap the Treaty of Westphalia and rearm merchant ships.
Are you kidding me?! The Somali pirates violated French citizens’ rights. They should be paying the French, not vice versa.
can we use the old Russian nukes for this or do you think they would mind?
I am going to guess no survivors. LOL!
That is the way to deal with terrorists.
Yeah I think the ECHR ruling is bullcrap and ought to be ignored. International maritime law is higher than ECHR.
In the end, ECHR’s ruling will result in more pirates executed at sea, if this ruling is going to be the norm. Just wipe em out out there and be done with it.
MAybe a blessing in disguise if the militaries get the “right” solution.
I guess the Europeans are more sensitive to their ‘perch of privilege’ then we knuckle dragging Americans are. /sarc
I have to admit crying a little over the ‘3 greens’ scene at the end of ‘Captain Phillips’.
I’m a sucker for fuzzy, feel-good endings.
I would have cut their heads off, put them in a box, and sent them to the maximum leader of that anal tract of a nation.
Fly ‘em home, cut them a check on the way, and drop them off. Preferably from an altitude requiring oxygen...
take your court order and shove it
