Charles Krauthammer said Wednesday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that a grand jury's decision not to indict a New York City police officer in the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died in July after the officer placed him in a chokehold, is "totally incomprehensible."
"It looks like they at least might have indicted him on something like involuntary manslaughter at the very least," Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, said. "The guy was unarmed, and the crime was petty as they come. He was selling loose cigarettes, which in and of itself is almost absurd that somebody has to die over that."

It’s just the tobacco.
Anything can be purchased there and there’s nary a peep out of anyone.
Unless you’re dealing in... oooooooooo... tobacco.
[dragnet music].
Since the coroner/ME ruled homicide by “compression of the neck”, I would think someone or something would have to be responsible/accountable?
Yesterday it as 32 ounce drinks. Major crime. Death penalty for sure.
I don’t regularly defend LEO actions - quite the contrary in fact. I support the LE position in Ferguson, but this case here seems to me to be stretched.
When it all boils down, this man resisted arrest for selling cigarettes and he ended up dying. When he said he couldn’t breathe, the officer should have loosened his hold. All I can say is NYCPD must have a very powerful union. Regardless of whether he is charged, NYC will end up paying a big time settlement in civil court on this.
My comment was in reference to the original actions of Wilson - not the politics afterwards.
Excellent point.
I feel sorry for the NYPD officer that got “guard the bronze bull” duty (Wall Street)...he rolled up & parked his cruiser there about an hour ago...been standing there since: http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/wallstreet/chargingbull/?cam=chargingbull_hd (other NYC HD LIVE cams avail. at the link).
An effective choke hold collapses the trachea primarily and prevents the movement of O2 into the lungs. A person who can not move air through their trachea and into their lungs can not speak. That’s why there is an international symbol of choking, placing your own crossed hands around your throat. When Eric Garner repeatedly stated, “I can’t breathe”, he was only able to do so because air was, in fact, moving through his trachea into his lungs. His breathing capacity may have been diminished but he was able to breathe at least up until he stopped talking. He died from the heart attack that he was having. One of the hallmark signs of a heart attack is difficulty breathing.
Right, we’re on the same page then.
Not intending to cause death while causing death is manslaughter. That is what Krauthammer said and he is right.
Watching the cops laughing while the man died is what made it so reprehensible. To not even see an indictment here is laughable.
Seems the old saying that a prosecutor can get an indictment of a ham sandwich no longer is truth.
Cops can basically do whatever they want without fear of repercussions.
No evidence of a choke-hold?
A photo isn’t good enough?
Absolute correct. I have been saying this all night.
He was breathing. Talking means you are breathing.
But trying to get that through some thick skulls is impossible.
“I can’t breathe” and hands up - don’t shoot
One is a lie and one didn’t happen.
Absolute should read ...Absolutely
Fatso criminal croaked due to a stress induced asthma attack. Stressing out over being arrested in a forcible way.
So now police cannot forcibly detain and arrest fat people with asthma????
His neighbors complained about this fatso pest always selling loose cigarettes out on the street
When this incident first occurred, a couple of people here posted that he wasn’t selling loose cigarettes. He was obviously selling drugs.
Now we have people here saying this was a good arrest.
When a group of cops can cause the death of an unarmed man and then stand around and laugh and there are no legal consequences, the system is broken.
Almost everyone here agrees the system is broken and we all lament that. Yet, here, some of us can’t see it.
A choke hold involves locking your hand into your other arm; there is no photo of that (the arm encircling the neck wasn’t “anchored”). Also, as they get the guy down there are no arms anywhere near his neck.
In Ferguson the witness testimony was sufficient to convince a jury (and most, if not all, FReepers) that there was no cause for indictment; let’s see what emerges from this.
How do you propose cops deal with someone resisting arrest? The whole cigarette thing is irrelevant once he is being arrested.
You see the black female sergeant in charge.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
At the very least the cops involved need to find a different day job, hopefully having to do nothing with police work.
If the victim was one of our own, a family member or a friend, we would be more sympathetic- whether he was obese or not.
