As Alice Roosevelt — quite the narcissist herself — said of her father: “He wants to be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral, and the baby at every christening.” Such was the man who first bethought himself of violating Washington's precedent. Sadly, his distant cousin and niece's husband succeeded.
I'm not sure what you meant by "violating Washington's precedent." Jefferson abandoned Washington's precedent and Teddy simply followed the practice of all the Presidents after Jefferson.
TR was asked if he could do something about Alice and replied that he could run the country or control Alice, but he couldn't do both of them at the same time.
I believe she is the one who said, "If you can't say anything nice about a person, come here and sit next to me."
