My 102-year-old mother-in-law, Henryne Walker Stewart Goode, whom we buried a week ago at the Walker family cemetery in Okolona, Miss., often told an unforgettable story at our kitchen table.
She attended Okolona College, where she was taught English and public speaking by James Raspberry, the father of my late Post colleague, William Raspberry. At one time, in my mother-in-laws telling, animals on the schools farm were falling victim to some invading marauder. A school employee discovered the culprit a dog and shot it. But the white farmer who owned the dog retaliated, turning up at the school to shoot the employee to death and threaten the schools president. The schools president was forced to flee, my mother-in-law said, but nothing happened to the white farmer. That said all we needed to know about Deep South justice of her youth.
An account in the July 4, 1931, edition of the Afro American flushed out the details of this tale, and over 90 years it deviated remarkably little from the facts. The dog that was shot by school employee Ulysses Baskin was part of a pack that attacked the schools sheep. On May 30, 1925, Baskin was in fact shot by the dogs owner eight times. School president Wallace A. Battle demanded the arrest of the culprit, but the local grand jury freed him. Battle didnt flee, though; he resigned in protest when the schools white trustees would not demand justice for the murder....

Michael Brown was a cigar stealing dog?
In the 800’s, the Moors...
(How far can we go back?)
We’ve all got stories. Like how my mother-in-law was raped and pistol-whipped by a black man, resulting in permanent brain injury. And how I had to sell my house and move because of the blacks that moved into the neighborhood and stole everything that wasn’t nailed down. And how my sister had her purse snatched. And how my best friend was murdered by a black holdup killer in his store. Pete was 33 yrs old, was loved, had a wife and kids.
We’ve all got stories.
Michael Brown ate chicken too.
The man’s dog was part of a pack? Or the pack of dogs all belonged to him?
... and now we have young black males murdering each other over imagined slights or for no apparent reason at all, in the hundreds every single weekend of the year. Not a peep from the perpetually aggrieved.
Was this a grave injustice? Yes it was. Has the country moved away from such behavior by white people against black people? It’s now diametrically opposed to the point that witch hunts are mounted against any white person who kills a black person, whether justified or not.
The only justified killing of black people is done by black people themselves, apparently. And this they’re doing in droves.
That’s Progress I guess.
Michael Brown was the marauding dog, Officer Wilson was the school employee who justifiably shot the dog, and the Ferguson rioters were the dog owner lynch mob.
I'm living on a more southern latitudinal line on I-10 than much of the nation, let alone the 'South', yet I don't hear my community in Texas called "Deep South".
Of course. That clearly must have been the point because there were no other similarities.
Michael Brown was a bully and a thief. He died trying to bully a cop.
Not the Moors.
The Moops.
.......I can’t believe I read the whole thing!
............before I wised up!
Apparently, you can do it in Mobile, AL, where a couple years ago a black cop shot and killed an 18 year old unarmed white kid (it was obvious he was unarmed because he was naked) and the grand jury refused to indict.
The kid was a LOT smaller than Brown, and I've been unable to find any information about how many times he was shot, but otherwise the two cases are remarkably similar.

Not to mention, I've never thought of Missouri as Deep South, but that's irrelevant.
We have no idea if the story is true or not.
If it is supposed to illicit some form of “white guilt” from me, it failed utterly.
Colbert King’s race card is maxed out.
If you have never tried to stop a dog from killing chickens you have no idea. It cannot be done!
Oh yeah, this story is relevant...
“Where else can you fire 12 shots at an unarmed teenager, at least six of which strike his body, and walk away?”
Answer: Anywhere, in any civilized country, where the “teenager” is 6’5”, nearly 300 lbs, and doing his best to disarm and kill you.
Only uncivilized countries would not allow it.
