Southern Democrats are joining others in the party who say that a return to advocating to lift people out of economic hardship and emphasizing spending on education and public works will re-energize black voters and attract whites as well.
"It's time to draw a line in the sand and not surrender our brand," Rickey Cole, the party chairman in Mississippi, said. He believes candidates have distanced themselves from the past half-century of Democratic principles.
"We don't need a New Coke formula," Cole said. "The problem is we've been out there trying to peddle Tab and RC Cola."
Cole and other Southern Democrats acknowledge divisions with prominent populists such as Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is expected to run for president in 2016, and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Yet they see merit in pushing stronger voting rights laws, tighter bank regulation, labor-friendly policies such as a higher minimum wage and other familiar party themes.
Democratic politics have become a tough sell in the conservative South. A major challenge in the region is finding candidates who can win high-profile races now that Republicans, who scored well in midterm elections earlier this month, dominate the leadership in state legislatures and across statewide offices.
Arkansas Democrats lost an open governor's seat and two-term Sen. Mark Pryor. Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu led an eight-candidate primary but faces steep odds in a Dec. 6 runoff. Democrats' closest statewide loss in the South was North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan's 1.7 percentage point margin of defeat.
Exit polling suggests Democrats did not get the black turnout they needed and lost badly among whites. Nunn and Carter got fewer than 1 in 4 white votes, while Pryor took 31 percent and Landrieu 18 percent.

democrats: the party of infanticide, homosexuals, repatriated traitors, pedophiles and other assorted perverts, murderers, thieves, wanna-be-dictators....
The perfect party to wallow in feces of all types.
Like Clinton said apropos the word “is”, it’s whatever they say it is :)
Designated by the ‘rats as “the conscience of the Senate”.
What the heck is a return to basics for dems? Race baiting? Shutting down the economy for environmentalists? Bigger deficits? More government control of everything?
Maybe “getting back to basics” means they just ease off a bit so people will stop noticing what they are doing.
Which says it all.
As a native Mississippian, I was disgusted with the Cochran fiasco. Demoncrats can use this as a “case study” of how the “elites” overrule the will of the People.
THE Democrat parties basics at one point was slavery of blacks, then war over slavery, then forming the KKK and fighting off the NRA FOR SUPPLYING FIREARMS to blacks in the south to defend against the KKK.
Return to basics? For many years Southern politicians could just yell “Schools! Motherhood! Highway Safety!. The guy who yelled the loudest usually won the elections.
I do consider the difference in how they dealt with Bob Packwood as opposed to how they dealt (or didn’t deal) with Clinton, as indicative :) But that probably also comes under the rubric of “rat hypocrisy”, which as you say, says it all.
And conservatives can use it as a case study of how having the “R” behind a candidate’s name isn’t the be-all and end-all of vetting said candidate.
‘emphasizing spending on education and public works will re-energize black voters and attract whites as well’
Democrats are caught in their own trap. They created an entitlement culture, fed it, nourished it and pandered to it. They thought it would be, and remain, a static pool of reliable voters.
But the entitlement mentality is an insatiable monster. It grows and morphs and above all demands: more, more, more.
There was a time when the entitlement mentality would be satisfied with more educational and public works spending. That time is long past. Now the Dem base demands more and more ‘free stuff’ it doesn’t have to lift a finger to receive. The base wants to sit on its rump and hear Dems promise it more and more ‘benefits’. Direct benefits. Benefits that can be used in lieu of a job or other type of earned income.
Dem voters will not get excited over ‘increased education spending’. That train left the station long ago. The only thing that will excite them now is additional welfare benefits.
The Dems created this monster. Now it is their master.
In my father’s day, Democrats used to stand for good jobs, taking care of our seniors and poor and making sure every one was treated equal under the law.
Today’s Democrats stand for radical environmentalism, make health care expensive and unaffordable by stealing money from seniors and bribing the poor to shun the free market with expanded Medicaid, taking away jobs from working Americans AKA amnesty, imposing perverted social values upon us like gay marriage and abortion and sowing strife and division between the races in our country.
Who the heck in their right mind would want to vote for what the Democrats have become? Not in the South. Its good to see them double down on what people just rejected. That’s what America has had enough of. This is not your father’s Democratic Party for sure and they no longer represent a liberalism people could be proud to identify with.
This is the 60s Counterculture flotsam and community organizers wrecking our country and the American people want it stopped.
Advocating to lift people out of economic hardship will never happen it put a crimp on the tax and spend kick back game plus to keep people under control you need to keep them needy.
They mastered the scam of we’re for you brother.
The democrat party was hijacked by the communists a long, long time ago. They’re still the party of the KKK, but this time around, they want EVERYONE to be slaves on the plantation (the “elite” excluded of course).
The only difference between slavery and communism is the percentage of the population that is under control of the masters, and the level of brutality leveled to keep the slaves under control.
And the other side of that coin is that, as the Free Sh*t Army is growing, the middle class taxpayers who pull the load is shrinking.
That is always the most important thing to them
So now the libs have resorted to slamming RC Cola. I love RC Cola. FU Libs. Your problem is that you are all socialists and the voting records prove it.
Never trust the chronic liar LIBs/DIMs. Never.
“I love RC Cola.”
Great cola! Falls somewhere between the sickenly sweet Pepsi and the unsatisfying Coca-Cola.
