And even stores like Home Depot who have them also have one or two people keeping an eye on the people using it.

I'm pretty sure the self-checkout is where Home Depot had their big security breech. Someone at a self-checkout installed some kind of software. I think it was an inside job - someone who had access to the software key.

Nope, the breach was on all their card readers. The idiots ordered card reader units that ran on Windows because they didn’t want to pay VeriFone for their units and they wanted a custom interface. Then they didn’t lock down the Windows based units or even bother auditing what their contractors put on them prior to shipping.
