Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama announced with great gravity the other day that Republicans had decided not to impeach President Obama over his plan to allow millions of immigrants to remain in this country without fear of deportation through his executive authority. But that concession is not the end of the matter. He is planning much more serious mischief: using Congresss power of the purse to pressure the White House into backing off.
Condemning the immigration action as unlawful, Mr. Sessions says he and other Republicans may filibuster any attempt to pay for government operations through the full fiscal year, which ends Oct. 1. Instead, he wants to pay for government through a series of short-term bills, possibly month to month, with each one trying to overturn Mr. Obamas actions.
That raises the possibility of a budget shutdown fight every month for nearly a year. And Mr. Sessions voice will count in that fight he is in line to be the new chairman of the Budget Committee.
Some Republican leaders, including the next majority leader, Senator Mitch McConnell, have tried to take a loftier position, saying they want a full years spending bill to avert a widespread shutdown. Nonetheless, they are seriously considering using short-term bills to pay for immigration enforcement. That approach is an implicit and reckless threat to close down immigration agencies to prevent them from issuing work permits to immigrants.
In the House, Speaker John Boehner has refused to rule out the possibility of threatening either a narrow or a full-scale shutdown to get Mr. Obama to back off his plans. Did Mr. Boehner learn nothing from the 16-day shutdown the House imposed on the country in October 2013?

You may reflexively adopt the opposite of their stance on absolutely any topic, and be assured you have chosen the right side.
“Impeaching in the House is easy, convicting in the Senate with the 2/3 majority is the hard part. I don’t think we should impeach just for show. “
Do what Reid did. Change the rule to 51 and have at it.
Uh! That would be us....funny when republicans win elections the liberals always say they won so they could enact "liberal policies" . As far as shutting the government down.. I subscribe to the Ted Cruz answer to that. Two years after shutting the government down republicans won a monumental election that boosted their numbers in virtually every category...we could stand some more so called disasters that get those kind of results!!!
Valid points. Betting the WH will counter moves to eliminate funds by using EOs to spend it anyway, or vetoing the smaller bills and shutting things down.
This we know: the opposition party needs to grow a spine in the coming months.
I realize it’s a “quirk” of mine. But, one thing that originally attracted me to FR was the opportunity to sharpen argumentation skills and vocabulary and to and write persuasively and logically.
I can enjoy engaging with those who like to engage on that basis. I used to cringe a little at the profanity and vulgarity; not because it offends delicate sensibility - it doesn’t. It’s just thoughtless and of no real consequence to the stated mission.
Mostly, I just lurk and read. And scroll very fast.
The Leftist NYT is simply crying hysterically because if the GOP runs Sessions’ blockade of illegal alien amnesty funding month by month, the Left can’t whip up a monthly frenzy over the Ultimate Threat to the Nation, a government shut down.
Of course, there is no such threat, with Ted Cruz’s government shutdown last December resulting in the Republican’s landslide election this November. No one believes the Obamedia tripe, but they are still trying.
I don’t see any harm in preparing a list of Obama’s impeachable offenses — and debating each of those offenses on live-time TV.
However, an impeachment-attempt-that-FAILS is EXACTLY what Obama wants.
Please let me know when you have 67 “rock-solid” votes for impeachment committed to go....
Until then, I will avoid being tricked into becoming one of Obama’s “useful idiots”
Absolutely right. The New York Times is evil. (Example: publishing officer Wilson’s address.). They idolize thugs like Mike Brown or murderous Palestinian terrorists, and try to justify what they do - no matter what it is.
Right. Well said.
"A simple majority of votes of both the Senate and the House can overturn an executive order."
You don't even need to read the issue or the stance the NYT takes.
Simply say, "Whatever the NYT stands for on this issue, whatever it is, I take the 180-degree opposite stance."
God will smile, and Satan will gnash his teeth.
****ing agree with all the **** you wrote above, *******.
No, we are not going to impeach or have a move to impeach. The president has certain powers. We truly believe, and I think it's accurate to say he abused those powers.Well, of course the Senate is not going to impeach Traitorobama, because that is a Constitutional responsibility of the House. And if Sessions is speaking on behalf of all Republicans in the House, that seems to be somewhat presumptuous of the Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee. Sessions is also quoted as saying:
I cant recall such a massive alteration of the classical understanding of what laws mean in America being wiped out.If Sessions really made these statements, then for him to suggest the House Republicans will not impeach Traitorobama is for him in effect to suggest that House Republicans will gang rape the oath each of them made to support and defend the Constitution against a traitor who has committed high crimes and misdemeanors. He [Obama] undermined, in my view, the moral integrity of immigration law and basically even the constitutional separation of powers.
LOVE your “pisses me off” lists. One of the things that keeps me coming back.
If you are taking flak, you know you are over the target!
Press on Republicans!
Show us some super-sized cajones!
You want opposing committees composed of 435 egomaniacs micromanaging everything? Really?
