Volunteers shovel Buffalo streets as flooding fears rise

BUFFALO - As temperatures near Buffalo, N.Y., rose above freezing on Saturday, volunteers fanned out to help their neighbours clear the walls of snow that have paralyzed parts of the region this week, but the warming trend also raised the threat of flooding.

More than 200 volunteers, called the Shovel Brigade Mob, armed themselves with shovels and headed into neighbourhoods south of downtown Buffalo. The group said some residents were still stuck in their homes, days after a lake-effect system clobbered the region with up to seven feet of snow.

The problem with sidewalk heat in an area with that high a snow fall is that the deeper snow on the perimeter of your melted area keeps runoff water from getting away without internal drains.

But you would sure be the envy of your neighbors.

Got one of my kids a big toro snow blower when he moved to Michigan — he was very happy.

“Despite the conditions, Heidinger said a regular sight has been people pulling beer in their sleds and carrying pizza boxes from a local pizzeria that had just reopened its doors in downtown Buffalo.”

God bless all of them!

Would not be difficult to put in the proper drainage.

That is a good way to get killed. Notice he has the ladder set up where it will tip sideways and fall over when a bigger chunk hits it.

I agree that trying to get some off the roof is a good idea but ladders are funny if you don’t understand them well.

I have seen guys try to pull a little section and a warm roof allows the whole roof load to slide a once — baaammm.

Wifey and I were watching some news coverage, and we both said we bet a new-construction trend is about to develop.

Here’s something like the Snow Ripper but bit better especially since you don’t need a ladder to get the snow off the roof.

I did an estimate on some B-52 hangers in North Dakota. You should have seen the snow melt system in the first ten feet outside those hanger doors. Ran off of big boilers and had two layers of piping embedded in the concrete so that if one layer became plugged, the system would still work.

That is just the sort of thing I was talking about. Until you have seen it happen, you would not expect it.

Another funny thing about snow load. You can cause a building collapse due to an issue referred to as Unbalanced loading. If you clear off the roof on one side of a main rafter where you have significant rafter to rafter spacing, you can have the roof fail or tear apart because there is now zero load on one side and the purlins or stringers will act like a teter-totter.

Saw a guy collapse his roof dock roof that way.

It’s pretty cool to see the inventiveness of people trying to come up with solutions to making snow removal from roofs easier.

I never thought about that. Yeah, you’re right. An unbalanced load like that can do some major damage.

I was under the impression that code in very snowy climates dictated a steeper pitch so that snow load would slide off largely of it’s own accord.

I’m in North Carolina, not known for big snowfalls but it does happen about once a decade with those “white hurricane” stalled out nor’easters, they just sit there off Cape Hatteras pumping it in off the Atlantic. Usually more than a foot and I’ve seen close to three before over my nearly five decades.

It’s heavy, wet snow too, so roof collapse can be an issue. It doesn’t enter anybody’s minds outside the mountain counties that all that snow could pose a threat. Flat roofs on the coast are especially prone.
