Land Rover just launched their Chinese-built Evoque at the Guangzhou Auto Show, while a few feet away, copycat LandWind X7 offered the same design at quarter of the price.

This Is Not A Range Rover Evoque - But rather its Chinese cousin, the Landwind X7
Understandably, JLR is about to file a complaint to Chinese officials now regarding IP theft. I say good luck with that, but one can sure feel bad for Jaguar Land Rover. They put their money in a joint venture with Chinese manufacturer Chery to start the Evoque's local production, and this is what they got in return. A cheap copycat powered by a Mitsubishi engine.
Land Rover chief executive officer Dr Ralf Speth had this to say to Autocar about the X7:
The fact that this kind of copying is ongoing in China is very disappointing. The simple principal is that it is not something that should happen; the Intellectual Property is owned by Jaguar Land Rover and if you break that IP then you are in breach of international regulations that apply around the world.

Oh give me a break!
The Chinese have ALWAYS copied anything and everything they get their hands on. It’s a cultural and in many ways a genetic predisposition with the Chinese.
And in modern times time 1900 to present it’s become more visible to the ‘western’ nations. I’ve said for many years to anyone who will listen... Dealing with the Chinese on their terms is always a losing proposition in the long run. They will steal all of your ‘intellectual property’ and leave you in the ashes of your dreams as they walk away smiling and laughing at you.
I can’t see Mopar importing/selling Jap vehicles with components constructed from pirated plans, but who knows. One thing I and everyone else know is China’s quality is as suspect as 0bama’s honesty. Now there’s a race to the bottom!
"homage car?" As apposed to a "luxury car" buyer? So tell me, oh great one who enjoys shoving their protuberant pockets of grubstake in people's faces, what if you could not afford an LR? Or is your "luxury" borrowed to meet you "refined taste"?
I have a lot of customers that were burned by the Chinese (tool and die shop along with other manufacturing). People, start ups especially, always see my price tag and think they can save a lot of money going to a Chinese manufacturer. I always warn them. BUT, after about 6 months to 1 year these people will come back when they see their patented idea is now on sale at Harbor Freight or WalMart and they still haven’t gotten a single first article.
Unless you have the muscle and international know how the Chinese manufacturers will rip you off. I feel a bit of shaudenfreud seeing the Chinese ripping off Land Rover. What did they expect?
Ford did not create a market for his products by overpaying his employees. He created competitors, because he had to charge more to cover cost of the padded wages. As the competition squeezed him on price, he zeroed out product variety and R&D, thereby inviting yet more competition. Shades of what happened to Detroit in the 80's, except the Japanese had a trump card - their cars were not only cheaper and more fuel-efficient; they were more reliable. Without the Plaza Accord that drastically raised the value of the yen against the dollar, Detroit's automakers would be pushing up daisies today.
Looks like it would be easy to break. Do they come with a Georgia warranty?
There are a lot of low cost labor locations but China seems to dominate the headlines insofar as IP ripoffs are concerned. Not sure if this is because China is bigger than all the other low cost locations combined, insofar as export-oriented plants are concerned, so you hear more about Chinese copycats.
I’m not against people buying what they can afford.
All I pointed out was in the luxury market, I expect the best in design, construction, manufacture and exclusiveness. I can shell out what the price might be.
This is true of all luxury goods by the way and buyers have very high standards and the goods should reflect it.
I had a Mitsubishi Montero with that same engine. The thing ran great to over 220,000 with almost no maintenance. Eventually it wouldn’t pass smog because the head gasket leaked oil to the point that the spark plugs were sitting in a pool of oil, but the damned thing still ran. It wasn’t worth the cost of getting it fixed, but it was the best vehicle I ever owned.
I wouldn’t argue that Ford “overpaid” his employees. But he did, pre-unionization, pay them a wage that was far above the average of the day and which did permit many to buy the basic and inexpensive Model T they were producing. That the car itself was affordable, in an age when only the very wealthy could think of purchasing an automobile, was far more important than his wage strategy. Being able to attract and hire the very best labor available was probably a far greater motivation than whether or not his employees could buy a car. But the latter was a happy, and one Ford himself touted, end result anyway.
Ordinarily the Chi-Com copies are poor copies of the original. Since they chose to copy a Land Rover (LOL) it might even wind up being superior to the original. Not that either one would be considered “good.”

LOL, they copied the Land Rover??? That means they should also copy the check book that is kept in the glove compartment.
Then why be insulting and personal by stating "if you want a homage car?"
You are correct on this, it would be stupid for a person with cash bulging in his/her pockets to by the less expensive look-alike; but not for one that could not afford the original - and vice versa.

I wouldn’t spend a dime for either of them.
Their styling is ugly, and defeats any utility imaginable.
