The 8 Jobs In High Demand That Don't Require A College Degree
Forbes ^ | November 20, 2014 | Kathryn Dill

(SLIDESHOW-AT-LINK)

As the high demand for skilled labor continues to dominate conversations about hiring, some jobs that don’t require a college degree remain open month after month, with few workers to fill them.

This list, compiled by CareerBuilder with Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. showcases roles for which a college degree is not required and where the number of jobs posted by companies each month far exceeds the number of workers employers are able to hire.

“Job creation is gaining ground and job seekers are gaining leverage,” said Matt Ferguson, CareerBuilder CEO. ”For nearly 70 occupations in the U.S, the rate at which workers are being hired isn’t keeping up with the frequency and volume of open positions being advertised. By drawing attention to talent deficits, our list underscores opportunities in everything from technology and health care to sales and transportation for job seekers looking to make a change.”

To create the list, CareerBuilder worked with EMSI to analyze the average number of workers hired each month in upwards of 700 occupations between January 2013 and August 2014 compared to the number of online job postings for each of these occupations over the same period. The jobs highlighted here may require additional training following high school, but do not require a college degree.

Topping the list are truck drivers, heavy and tractor-trailer. Nearly a quarter of a million postings for these jobs appear online, on average, each month, while 131,902 drivers are hired. Truck drivers bring in median hourly earnings of $18.37, and in 2014 nearly two million workers counted themselves among their ranks.

Next up are merchandise displayers and window trimmers–a particularly relevant job as the holidays approach....

No but I believe veterans deserve priority from society and I liked helping people get off the dole (the welfare recipients) and get their pride back. I was responsible for literally thousands of people finding work during my time there and ran the most successful job fairs in Iowa.

I suspect it won’t be long until the typical fast food site has 2 employees per shift, mostly for logistics and sanitation.

Already the case at Olive Garden for example.

Your food is frozen in bag, boiled and placed on top of re-heated pasta.

Salads are delivered from vendors like SYSCO and placed into bowls.

Not much creativity, just follow procedure and make sure you don't run out of stock.

Only 2 jobs pay decently. Go to college.....I am stunned by the folks who say it is so expensive. It is the best investment you could ever make. It is the difference of making 500,000 in a life time and 1,000,000 in a lifetime. Completely crazy of those not nothing to go to college. You better get your Master’s while you are at it.

Not as soon as fast food/short-order or “Chili’s” style cooks, but never? I think you know better than that.

OK.

There’s a lot more to a self-driving car than monitoring the speed and distance of the car in front.

Building one that will keep the personal-injury lawyers at bay will bleed Google white.

I certainly believe the technology will be there.
But I’m also thinking the tort bar will do everything possible to hold them back.
And ambulance chasing attorneys have a huge influence on public policy in the US.

A PROJECT??? Of course there will be a PROJECT, but that project will NEVER be on an INTERSTATE road or even a main road for more than 1 minute!!

You are way out of touch with current technology.

I drive a 2008 model year car so it doesn’t have the traffic assist electronics. In the last few years it seemed like people were glued to my bumper on the interstate. I’d speed up and then slow down and presto, they were tailgating me again at a constant distance. I drove a vehicle a few weeks ago that answered the question. It had adaptive cruise control. It had several settings which allowed tailgating highway speeds. Not good in my book..

If you don’t like your ABS, just pull the fuse. Then you’re brakes work like old school.

True. When that ABS light is on, it means ABS isn't working and you are now safe.

Yeah, $10K-$40K a year for four years---that's cheap.

Every single kid I know who has graduated from college is working at mall stores or Starbucks. One of them works at Bath and Body Works, Yankee Candle, and has a third job outside the mall.

Meanwhile, the mechanic who has been taking care of our vehicles for the past twenty years is a millionaire.

Trade school is where it's at, not college. A kid picks up a moneymaking skill that could even be used as barter in the case of societal/economic collapse. And they don't have to suffer brainwashing by leftwing professors.
