Sen. Ted Cruz took to the Senate floor Thursday to deliver a slightly changed version of a very old speech as a form of protest against President Obama's planned executive action on immigration.
The Texas Republican, in a four-minute address, gave a gently edited version of Cicero's first oration against Cataline.
Obama was substituted for Cataline, the U.S./Mexico border was swapped in for the Palatine Hill, "women" was added to references to men, "pen and phone" made an appearance, "execution" was changed to "defeat" and the IRS scandal showed up near the end.
The video is above, and the text of Cicero's original address is below.

“...a slightly changed version of a very old speech...”
How does that square with the ‘Mad Libs’ in the title? Does the person who puts in the header actually read the article? Do these people have an editor?!
It is doubtful that the greatest orator in the history of the Roman Senate is anything but some obscure old dead white man to the people surrounding the usurper or himself. But to those of us with some knowledge of history Cruz’s use of Cicero’s oration in defense of his republic is sublime.
sure no problem. I didn’t notice there was another thread. I just posted the link so it would be easier for people to watch
Where is the leadership on this issue, and many others, from the other potential POTUS candidates like Scott Walker and Rand Paul?
Hardly a word from them on this issue for several months now.
Do they really want to be POTUS?
Do they really want to lead?!
He’s angry. Angry =”mad”
The speech was ad-libbed in the original.
Mad = ad-lib =Mad-lib.
That’s how I see it, anyhoo.
D’oh!
Mad + ad-lib...
OOPS
Where’s Marcus Junius Brutus when you need him?
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER CRUZ is doing what real Statesmen do, they LEAD!!
“Mad Libs” was a game of sorts. I loved Mad Libs as a kid. I consider it ‘goofy fun’, & not an appropriate appellation for a serious speech.
Sublime is the right word. Simply sublime.
Cicero: quoted by JFK, quoted by Goldwater and now quoted by Cruz.
Of course, it did not end well for Cicero.
A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within.
An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly against the city. But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely, his sly whispers rustling through all alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.
For the traitor appears no traitor; he speaks in the accents familiar to his victim, and he wears their face and their garments and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.
A murderer is less to be feared. The traitor is the plague.
- Marcus Tullius Cicero, Roman Orator - 106-43 B.C.
Frankly, I don’t see anyone or anything stopping the communist dicktator’s communist coup...
Amnesty for 40 million ILLEGAL INVADING socialists will enable a permanent socialist voting majority.
No senate confirmations? No F’n big deal.
No money for funding? No F’n big deal.
The end game was always to get a leftwing socialist voting majority to finally overthrow America and our Constitution.
