Getting fresh fruits and vegetables onto lunch trays in public schools was only half the battle, because it turns out most kids still arent eating them. Researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, studied students eating habits and found nearly six out of 10 wont even touch a healthy food option on their plate.
"We have been thinking that if young children choose healthy food, they will eat it," said the studys co-author Dr. Susan M. Gross, a research associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in a press release. "But our research shows that is not necessarily so."
Researchers watched 274 kids in kindergarten, and first and second grade, in 10 different New York City public school cafeterias, and noted their food selection and eating habits. They waited to see how many 6- to 8-year-olds would choose a fruit, vegetable, whole grain, low-fat milk, and lean protein to place on their tray. Researchers took photos of each tray, which revealed all of them took a milk and whole grain, 75 percent of the kids chose a protein, 59 percent chose a vegetable, and 58 percent chose a fruit. But did they eat it?
Not really. Only 75 percent of the kids took at least a bite of their protein and 24 percent ate one bite of their vegetables.

/src on/We need the gov’t to completely take over feeding kids. Instead of kids having the option of eating unhealthy food before and after school the state for their own good must provide all healthy meals. As in Maoist China the state will set up communal kitchens where kids will be required to eat all their healthy meals. Kids will not be allowed to eat food outside the communal kitchen./src off/
In other news: water is wet and your nose is on the front of your face.
My grandson takes his lunch most of the time. After I picked him up from school yesterday, he was starving. I asked him why he was so hungry, and he said “because I ate school lunch.”
One of our clients raises chickens for food. They’re range free. She says “This way, they only have one bad day”.
I’m sure parents across the country are shocked that the government is having trouble getting children to eat their vegetables.
Feed the little buggers Maine lobster floating in melted butter, Wagyu steak, with some
hot, greasy, French Fries straight from the deep fat fryer - just like Big Moochie eats.
Have you seen the pictures of the “vegetables” they are serving?
I like vegetables, but I wouldn’t eat the crap they are serving.
“We have been thinking that if young children choose healthy food, they will eat it,” said the studys co-author Dr. Susan M. Gross,”
Dan ackroid Voice < Susan, you poor, misguided scrag! What would you expect from your average 6 or 7 y/o? Of course, you’d probably love it, if Moochelle would hand feed each kid his/her healthy lunch selections personally you ignorant slut/>
Were they sliced locally? Or were the pears local, and not long-distance?
It must be hard to be a liberal. Everything you do needs to be properly vetted and justified. For instance, I (and you, I'd assume) would say, "I'd like scrambled eggs for breakfast, please. And those pears look delicious, too.". Then we'd eat them and be full and happy.
BUT IF WE WERE LIBERAL ..... we'd need to know if the chickens were organic, free-range, hand-fed, and locally sourced? What about the pears? Were the pears gently picked, so as to not cause too much trauma to the tree? Were they sliced with a properly sharpened knife? Were the farm workers paid a living wage? What about the cafeteria workers?
and so on. What a tortured, self-imposed hell they create for themselves. :-)
we always have an after school meal for the niece and nephew out here
I remember my Grandma executing free range chickens back when I was a kid. It took 4 or 5 to make a small meal, chicken and dumplings.
Kids, given the choice between dessert and green beans, will eat green beans?
Dr. Gross must not have kids. Or, frankly, have been around kids. Or seen kids outside of a picture book. Ever. Really. Because you and I could have looked at this premise, said "Nope, that's wrong.", and saved a whole lot of time and tax dollars.
What an idiot. To think that you and I are paying taxes to support her makes me irate.
Keep posting those menus.
They piss me off, but also make want to go shopping! Trying to decide which three mushrooms to use.
lol
